Spotify has once again revolutionized the music streaming industry with its latest AI feature. In addition to its successful AI DJ feature, the company has now introduced AI playlists in beta mode. This innovative offering allows users to generate personalized playlists based on written prompts.
The new feature will first roll out to users in the U.K. and Australia on Android and iOS devices, with more countries to follow in the coming months.
Spotify’s AI technology takes playlist creation to the next level. While traditional playlist requests are based on genres or time frames, the AI allows for a wider range of prompts. From “songs to serenade my cat” to “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse,” the possibilities are endless. Users can even reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and emojis in their prompts. However, the best playlists are generated using a combination of genres, moods, artists, and decades.
But how does the AI accurately understand the user’s intent? Spotify utilizes large language models (LLMs) and its own personalization technology to create personalized AI-generated playlists. This technology takes into account the user’s listening history and preferences to curate the perfect playlist.
Once the playlist is generated, users can further customize it by giving commands like “less upbeat” or “more pop.” They can also remove songs from the playlist by swiping left on the track.
“With our AI technology, we aim to enhance the user’s listening experience by offering personalized playlists based on their unique prompts and preferences.” – Spotify
Spotify has been investing in AI technology for many months now. Last year, they launched the global expansion of AI DJ, which uses Sonantic and OpenAI technology to create an artificial version of the voice of Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan. This voice introduces personalized songs to users.
The company has also teased other potential uses for AI technology, including summarizing podcasts, creating AI-generated audio ads, and even cloning a podcast host’s voice for host-read ads. But with the launch of AI playlists, it’s clear that Spotify is fully committed to using AI to enhance its streaming service.
To access the AI playlists feature, users can go to the “Your Library” tab on Spotify’s app and tap on the plus button (+) at the top right of the screen. From there, they can select the “AI Playlist” option, along with the existing “Playlist” and “Blend” options.
If a user is not sure what prompts to try, Spotify provides suggestions like “get focused at work with instrumental electronica,” “fill in the silence with background café music,” or “explore a niche genre like Witch House.” Once they’ve generated a playlist, they can save it by tapping the “Create” button.
It’s worth noting that Spotify has put guardrails in place to prevent offensive prompts or those related to current events or specific brands. This ensures that the AI technology remains a positive and enjoyable experience for users.
While this is not the first time Spotify has introduced a feature that allows for personalized playlists using prompts, it is the first time they’ve utilized AI technology. This takes playlist creation to a whole new level and further solidifies Spotify as a leader in the music streaming world.
With the constant advancements in AI and machine learning, it’s exciting to see what else Spotify has in store for its users in the future.
