Apple is gearing up to climb aboard the runaway train of generative artificial intelligence at the upcoming World Wide Developer Conference. Rumors suggest a partnership with OpenAI that aims to enhance the capabilities of Siri and bring a new product to the table: Apple Intelligence. The company has been strategic in keeping the initials AI, as it takes a swing at the large language model (LLM) piñata.
According to recently surfaced reports from Bloomberg, Apple Intelligence will be the focal point of the much-awaited keynote on Monday at 10 a.m. PT. Along with the reveal of its name, new details emerge concerning potential features and device compatibility.
The beta version of Apple Intelligence will be available for select devices, in line with the company’s approach to developer-oriented operating system updates post-WWDC. Expect to see it on upcoming versions of the iPhone, iPad, and Macs. Additionally, older devices such as iPads and Macs running on M1 chip or higher, and the iPhone 15 Pro, will be able to support the system. However, the standard iPhone 15 may not be included.
At launch, Apple Intelligence plans to enhance existing applications. This includes the ability to summarize web pages on Safari and provide notification summaries. As previously reported, Siri is set for an upgrade in 2024, with the potential to support voice-controlled photo editing. It seems that Apple’s foray into AI is more focused on practicality and user-friendliness rather than flashy features.
Despite the limitations on hardware, the system won’t operate solely on-device. Instead, it will combine local and cloud-based processes depending on the complexity of the task.
