“Meta’s Repeat Outage: WhatsApp Experiences Major Service Interruption”

Facebook Glitch6
For the second time in just over a month, Meta’s apps including WhatsApp, and possibly Messenger and Instagram, are facing outages and intermittent issues. WhatsApp also confirmed the outage in an update to its X account. (In our own tests, Meta’s apps were loading and we could send messages via WhatsApp which indicates either the outages were not global in nature or they’ve already been fixed.) This is not the first time Meta’s apps have seen a sizable outage this year. At the time, Meta’s status page had signaled problems with products like Ads Manager as well.

“Encouraging Women to Embrace AI: Insights from Kristine Gloria of the Aspen Institute on Embracing Curiosity in the Field”

Women In Ai Gloria
We’ll publish several pieces throughout the year as the AI boom continues, highlighting key work that often goes unrecognized. Kristine Gloria leads the Aspen Institute’s Emergent and Intelligent Technologies Initiative — the Aspen Institute being the Washington, D.C.-headquartered think tank focused on values-based leadership and policy expertise. What are some issues AI users should be aware of? What is the best way to responsibly build AI? How can investors better push for responsible AIOne specific task, which I admire Mozilla Ventures for requiring in its diligence, is an AI model card.

Exploring the Influence of Artificial Intelligence on Indian Society: The Work of Urvashi Aneja

Women In Ai Aneja
Aneja’s current research focuses on the societal impact of algorithmic decision-making systems in India, where she’s based, and platform governance. Aneja recently authored a study on the current uses of AI in India, reviewing use cases across sectors including policing and agriculture. At the same time, India had launched its Digital India mission and National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. What are some issues AI users should be aware of? Investors need to consider the entire life cycle of AI production — not just the outputs or outcomes of AI applications.

A Call for Responsible AI Practices: Brandie Nonnecke of UC Berkeley Urges Investors to Take Action for Women in AI

Women In Ai Nonnecke
Nonnecke also co-directors the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, where she leads projects on AI, platforms and society, and the UC Berkeley AI Policy Hub, an initiative to train researchers to develop effective AI governance and policy frameworks. I’ve been working in responsible AI governance for nearly a decade. First, The University of California was the first university to establish responsible AI principles and a governance structure to better ensure responsible procurement and use of AI. For women entering the AI field, my advice is threefold: Seek knowledge relentlessly, as AI is a rapidly evolving field. Investors have the power to shape the industry’s direction by making responsible AI practices a critical factor in their investment decisions.

Exploring the Intersection of Women and AI: The Groundbreaking Work on AI and Intimacy by King’s College’s Kate Devlin

Women In Ai Devlin
We’ll publish several pieces throughout the year as the AI boom continues, highlighting key work that often goes unrecognized. Kate Devlin is a lecturer in AI and society at King’s College London. I guess it’s a two-pronged thing: we need more women in visible, top positions, and we need to tackle sexism in schools and beyond. What are some issues AI users should be aware of? Hold the companies responsible for considering things like human rights, labor, sustainability and social impact in their AI supply chain.

How AI Technology Can Identify Flaws and Prevent Product Recalls: The Axion Ray Approach

There, he saw that AI-powered projects to prevent product issues would often fail because the AI wasn’t sufficiently fine-tuned. “Without [the right solution], many different groups across the enterprise do siloed analyses about emerging quality issues. “Product quality issues can have an impact on the end user if [the] issues aren’t addressed quickly and efficiently,” First told TechCrunch in an interview. “We use a specialized AI to scan messy, unstructured and disconnected data across various systems to flag emerging recurring product quality issues,” First explained. First asserted, however, that Axion will delete customer data within 30 days of receiving a request.

“Exploring AI Impact: An Interview with Oxford Professor of Data Ethics, Sandra Watcher”

We’ll publish several pieces throughout the year as the AI boom continues, highlighting key work that often goes unrecognized. Sandra Wachter is a professor and senior researcher in data ethics, AI, robotics, algorithms and regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute. She’s also a former fellow of The Alan Turing Institute, the U.K.’s national institute for data science and AI. What are some issues AI users should be aware of? Bad data, bad algorithms and bad design choices lead to worse products.

Update 05/05/2024 11:45 AM ET: The article has been updated to reflect that Discord has solved the issue and is back online.

“Empowering Women in AI: Meet Krystal Kauffman, Research Fellow at the Distributed AI Research Institute”

Women In Ai Kauffman
We’ll publish several pieces throughout the year as the AI boom continues, highlighting key work that often goes unrecognized. Krystal Kauffman worked as an organizer on political and issue campaigns for a decade before pursuing a degree in geology. For the next two years, I was able to support myself doing data work in which I completed tasks that helped program AI, build LLMs and so on. What are some issues AI users should be aware of? Similarly, the creation of AI legislation has to involve data workers.

Utilizing Sound Technology for Plumbing Problem Detection: The Innovation of Conservation Laboratories

Water authorities and utilities have used acoustic sensors to canvas for leaks and signs of wear and tear for years. One of these startups, Conservation Labs, is creating a water-listening sensor that attaches to the plumbing in residential, multifamily and office properties. But as with many — if not most — AI- and algorithm-driven products on the market, it’s tough to know exactly how well Conservation Labs’ tech performs without extensively testing it first. Like water-listening sensors, acoustic sensors that monitor machines is well-established tech. Beyond Conservation Labs, startups like Noiseless Acoustics and OneWatt use AI-powered sensors to better understand the patterns of industrial equipment.
