OpenAI is expanding to Japan, with the opening of a new Tokyo office and plans for a GPT-4 model optimized specifically for the Japanese language. Japan is the current G7 chair and President of the G7’s Hiroshima AI Process, an initiative to promote AI safety, including stronger AI governance. EnterprisingAs president of OpenAI Japan, Nagasaki will be tasked with building a local team on the ground to double down on OpenAI’s business in the country. OpenAI says ChatGPT is also being used by local governments to “improve the efficiency of public services in Japan.”ChatGPT has long been conversant in multiple languages, including Japanese. For now, OpenAI is giving early access to the GPT-4 custom model to some local businesses, with access gradually opened up via the OpenAI API “in the coming months.”

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s viral AI-powered chatbot, just got a big upgrade. OpenAI announced today that premium ChatGPT users — customers paying for ChatGPT Plus, Team or Enterprise — can now leveraged an updated and enhanced version of GPT-4 Turbo, one of the models that powers the conversational ChatGPT experience. It was trained on publicly available data up to December 2023, in contrast to the previous edition of GPT-4 Turbo available in ChatGPT, which had an April 2023 cut-off. “When writing with ChatGPT [with the new GPT-4 Turbo], responses will be more direct, less verbose and use more conversational language,” OpenAI writes in a post on X. Our new GPT-4 Turbo is now available to paid ChatGPT users.

Expanding capabilities: OpenAI’s enhancement of personalized model training initiation

OpenAI is expanding a program, Custom Model, to help enterprise customers develop tailored generative AI models using its technology for specific use cases, domains and applications. “Dozens” of customers have enrolled in Custom Model since. As for custom-trained models, they’re custom models built with OpenAI — using OpenAI’s base models and tools (e.g. Fine-tuned and custom models could also lessen the strain on OpenAI’s model serving infrastructure. Alongside the expanded Custom Model program and custom model building, OpenAI today unveiled new model fine-tuning features for developers working with GPT-3.5, including a new dashboard for comparing model quality and performance, support for integrations with third-party platforms (starting with the AI developer platform Weights & Biases) and enhancements to tooling.

“Ex-Snap AI Executive Debuts Higgsfield in Challenge Against OpenAI’s Sora Video Generator”

OpenAI captivated the tech world a few months back with a generative AI model, Sora, that turns scene descriptions into original videos — no cameras or film crews required. So he launched Higgsfield AI, an AI-powered video creation and editing platform designed for more tailored, personalized applications. In fact, Mashrabov sees social media — and social media marketing — as Higgsfield’s principle money-making niche. So we believe video generative AI solutions will be a core solution in helping them to achieve it.”Of course, Higgsfield isn’t immune from the broader challenges facing generative AI startups. It’s well-established that generative AI models like the kind powering Diffuse can “regurgitate” training data.

Is OpenAI Dominating the Market with its Publisher Agreements?

OpenAI’s legal battle with The New York Times over data to train its AI models might still be brewing. But OpenAI’s forging ahead on deals with other publishers, including some of France’s and Spain’s largest news publishers. OpenAI on Wednesday announced that it signed contracts with Le Monde and Prisa Media to bring French and Spanish news content to OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. So, OpenAI’s revealed licensing deals with a handful of content providers at this point. The Information reported in January that OpenAI was offering publishers between $1 million and $5 million a year to access archives to train its GenAI models.

“Breaking News: OpenAI Welcomes New Board Members and Reinstates CEO Sam Altman!”

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has a seat at the table — or board, rather — once again. OpenAI today announced that Altman will be rejoining the company’s board of directors several months after losing his seat and being forced out as OpenAI’s CEO. Joining alongside him are three members, former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former Sony Entertainment president Nicole Seligman and Instacard CEO Fidji Simo — bringing OpenAI’s board to seven people. Seligman was Sony’s VC and general counsel before rising through the ranks to CEO of Sony Corporation and president of Sony Corporation of America. Both OpenAI CTO Mira Murati and Ilya Sutskever, a former OpenAI board member and the startup’s chief scientist, approached members of OpenAI’s previous board to express concerns about Altman’s behavior prior to his ouster last year, according to The Times.

Elon Musk Takes Legal Action Against OpenAI and Sam Altman for Breaching Non-Profit AI Agenda

The lawsuit says that OpenAI has shifted to a for-profit model focused on commercializing its AGI research with Microsoft, the world’s most valuable company. “This was a stark betrayal of the Founding Agreement.”The lawsuit follows Musk voicing displeasure with OpenAI’s shift in priorities in the past year. For the first several years, Musk was the largest contributor to OpenAI, the lawsuit adds. He alleges OpenAI and Microsoft have improperly licensed GPT-4 despite agreeing OpenAI’s AGI capabilities would remain non-profit and dedicated to humanity. Musk is seeking to compel OpenAI to adhere to its original mission and bar from monetizing technologies developed under its non-profit for the benefit of OpenAI executives or partners like Microsoft.

Unlocking GenAI: How Diffusion Transformers are Revolutionizing OpenAI’s Sora

Saining Xie, a computer science professor at NYU, began the research project that spawned the diffusion transformer in June 2022. Diffusion models typically have a “backbone,” or engine of sorts, called a U-Net. In other words, larger and larger transformer models can be trained with significant but not unattainable increases in compute. The current process of training diffusion transformers potentially introduces some inefficiencies and performance loss, but Xie believes this can be addressed over the long horizon. “I’m interested in integrating the domains of content understanding and creation within the framework of diffusion transformers.

“Introducing ChatGPT by OpenAI: An Exclusive Subscription for Small Teams”

OpenAI is launching a new subscription plan for ChatGPT, its viral AI-powered chatbot, aimed at smaller, self-service-oriented teams. Aptly called ChatGPT Team, the plan provides a dedicated workspace for teams up to 149 people using ChatGPT as well as admin tools for team management. ChatGPT Team also lets people within a team build and share GPTs, custom apps based on OpenAI’s text-generating AI models. ChatGPT Team is priced at $30 per user per month or $25 per user per month billed annually — higher than ChatGPT Plus, OpenAI’s individual premium ChatGPT plan, which costs $20 per month. ChatGPT Team seems tailor-made for small- and medium-sized business customers who want team-oriented ChatGPT features without having to pay top dollar for them.

X (Twitter) Seems to Be Dealing with a Prevalent Bot Verification Issue

Bots Glitch X Twitter
It looks like X, the company formerly known as Twitter, has a Verified bot problem. It does appear that at least some of the bot accounts are older, according to the “join date” that’s displayed on their X profile. While a few were from real people joking about the bot problem, the majority were AI responses. It appears that the Verified bots are largely X accounts created in the November 24-26, 2023 timeframe. The company admitted last summer it had a Verified spammer problem when it announced new DM settings.
