Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent a warning memo last week, stating that the company will have to make tough choices and more layoffs are expected this year.
In the memo, Pichai acknowledges the difficulty of last year’s job cuts, where the company had to let go of 12,000 employees, making up 6% of their workforce. However, he assures that this year’s cuts will not be on the same scale.
According to The Verge, the recent layoffs have already affected several teams, including hardware, engineering, ads, and services, resulting in over 1,000 employees being laid off. The company has also confirmed that Fitbit’s co-founders, James Park and Eric Friedman, are leaving.
Pichai said in an email to staffers, “Many of these changes are already announced, though to be upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted.”
On Wednesday, Google further reorganized by laying off 100 YouTube employees.
