Communities Introduced on Messenger by Meta with Little Fanfare

Meta is quietly rolling out a new “Communities” feature on Messenger, the company confirmed to TechCrunch. The rollout comes as Meta introduced Communities on WhatsApp back in 2022. They could create dedicated group chats for topics like upcoming events, security alerts, trash pickup schedules, and more. Although the feature works similarly to Communities on WhatsApp, Meta says there is one key differentiator, which is the fact that Messenger Communities are connected to Facebook’s social graph. On a help page, Meta says Communities on Messenger are designed for more public conversations when compared to Facebook groups.

Meta is introducing a brand-new feature on Messenger, called “Communities”, which will help various organizations, schools, and private groups to communicate in a more organized and efficient way. This feature, previously released on WhatsApp in 2022, aims to connect people without requiring them to be associated with a Facebook Group.

The launch indicates that Meta is looking to expand Messenger’s functionality and differentiate it from other messaging services, like iMessage.

The new feature allows users to create designated spaces for real-time communication on Messenger without being linked to a Facebook Group. This shows that Meta is looking to enhance Messenger’s capabilities and establish its unique identity among other messaging apps like iMessage. By adding a broader social networking aspect, Meta hopes to help individuals find and connect with their communities directly within Messenger.

In Communities, multiple group chats are merged into one place, and each Community has its own “Home” space that administrators can use to share updates and announcements. With capacity for up to 5,000 members through shareable invites, Communities cater to various groups, including organizations, schools, PTAs, and neighborhoods. This feature can also be utilized to create a dedicated space for connecting with friends who share similar interests.

For example, a neighborhood can create a Community to keep everyone connected and updated on different topics, such as upcoming events, security alerts, and trash pickup schedules. Similarly, a school can create a Community with dedicated group chats for each grade, allowing parents to join and discuss topics relevant to their children.

Meta says there is one significant distinction with Messenger Communities – they are connected to Facebook’s social network.

While WhatsApp requires a user’s phone number to invite them to a Community, Builder on Messenger can expand their Community by inviting Facebook friends and friends of friends.

Meta’s Communities on Messenger are designed for more public conversations compared to Facebook groups, as stated on their help page. This means that all members, present, and future, can view the chat content.

This awaited feature is now available globally for all Messenger users. Experience the new sense of community-building on Messenger!
