Can Aethero Become the Intel or Nvidia of the Space Industry?

Dsc05615 1
Satellite sensors collect an incredible amount of raw data, but on-orbit compute limitations mean that operators have little way to process this data in space. The startup is developing radiation-hardened edge computers for on-orbit data processing and eventually even autonomous decision-making. The startup’s first generation space computer is called the AetherNxN, which is based around an Nvidia Orin processor. Aethero is planning to release a larger, second-generation module for bigger spacecraft before transitioning to a proprietary space processor. “We see ourselves as becoming the Intel or Nvidia of the space industry,” he said.

“EU Launches DSA Investigation on AliExpress, the Leading Online Marketplace”

The European Union has opened its third formal investigation of a very large platform under the Digital Services Act (DSA), with China’s AliExpress earning itself the dubious honor of being the first online marketplace to face formal probe by the Commission. Social media platforms X and TikTok are the two other very large online platforms (VLOPs) already under formal DSA investigation (since December and February, respectively). They said it will also look into transparency and safety concerns related to influencers’ use of AliExpress. It said it will also investigate how the influencer affiliate program is implemented to verify whether it complies with DSA transparency rules. There’s no fixed timeline for the EU to conclude a DSA investigation.

Official Release of Proton Mail Desktop App – Limited to Premium Subscribers

Proton Mail Desktop App
Proton Mail, the end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) email service from Swiss company Proton, is now officially available via a dedicated desktop app some three months after debuting in beta. However, despite previous claims that the client would be available to all Proton Mail users in early 2024, the company has decided to restrict it to paying users. In related news, Proton is also making its email service available via a standalone Linux desktop app, launching today in beta. It’s worth noting that while Proton Mail has been available to desktop users from the company’s inception, initially through the browser and more recently a “bridge” which opened up access to Proton Mail through third-party desktop clients such as Apple Mail and Outlook, today’s news brings a dedicated Windows and MacOS app to the fray. This means that emails can be cached and accessed when offline, while users can funnel into Proton Mail directly from the MacOS dock or Windows Start menu.

The UK has exited the European Union, but semiconductor development is emerging as one of the areas where it hopes to partner for better economies of scale — and much-needed funding. The UK itself said it would put up a more modest £35 million ($44 million) in funding for UK efforts over the next few years as part of that. The Chips Joint Undertaking, for example, has an overall budget of about €11 billion from both public and private contributions. In December 2023, Pragmatic Semiconductor, another Cambridge-based chip company, raised $231 million at a $500 million valuation. “We are very happy to welcome the UK to the Chips Joint Undertaking as a participating state,” said Jari Kinaret, Chips JU Executive Director, in a statement.

Employee-focused mental health company Journey is acquiring Felt, a startup formerly known as Mine’d that specializes in matching individuals with therapists using artificial intelligence. Journey, which offers a mental health employee assistance program used by companies like Walgreens and Universal Music Group, says the acquisition aligns with its mission to revolutionize employee well-being and mental health support while leveraging the power of AI. While Felt’s technology was initially designed for a consumer-facing app, it will be integrated into Journey’s backend product. Journey CEO and founder Stephen Sokoler told TechCrunch that Felt’s technology will be integrated into the company’s Proactive EAP platform. The company plans to pair Felt’s AI-based technology with its existing human-enabled therapist pairings in order to better match employees with therapists.

TikTok Expands Monetization Opportunities for Creators in Additional Countries

Tiktok Tokyo Game Show
TikTok is expanding its Effect Creator Rewards monetization program to more regions and lowering its payout threshold, the company announced today. The program, which launched in May 2023, rewards creators for the effects they make through TikTok’s AR development platform, Effect House. TikTok is also updating the program’s payout model, as creators will now only receive rewards for effects used in public videos. Effect Creator Rewards is now available in a total of 53 regions. Previously, creators needed an effect to have been used in 200,000 qualified videos within 90 days for the effect to start collecting rewards.

Accel India backs Nanonets to enhance AI-driven workflow automation

Nanonets Founders
Nanonets, which primarily targets the financial services sector, says its AI platform aims to improve the efficiency of these processes and make them cost-effective. The company’s AI platform uses machine learning architectures to analyze unstructured data from uploaded documents and extract useful information. Nanonets is not alone in the global market for AI-based workflow automation. Consistent revenue growth is one reason investors have been investing in AI startups despite the slowdown in global markets. AI startups in the U.S. receive the most investments, followed by companies in China, U.K., Israel and India.

“Empowering Solar Power in Spain: SolarMente, with Support from Leonardo DiCaprio’s Backing”

Solarmente Co Founders Wouter Draijer And Victor Gardrinier
Draijer said the company started off as an installer of solar panels in Spain, but after the pandemic, it decided it should offer a solar energy management system. “Solar is not a product,” Draijer said, explaining why most Spaniards can’t or just don’t want to pay upfront for solar panels. That’s why SolarMente offers subscription-based energy management services, which include installing solar panels without upfront costs. “We’re using this round to really power our super app for home energy,” Gardrinier said. But first, SolarMente wants to further expand across Spain, where its subscription solar offer just became available nationwide, Draijer told TechCrunch.
