“Atlas Bows: Boston Dynamics Bids Farewell to Its Hydraulic Humanoid Robot”

Farewell To Hd Atlas.2024 04 15 16 32 46
Now that humanoids are all the rage in the robotics industry, Boston Dynamics on Tuesday officially retired theirs. Boston Dynamics has been focused on commercializing technologies for a number of years now. Boston Dynamics was, of course, well ahead of the current humanoid robotics curve. Another wrinkle in today’s news is that, as of February, Boston Dynamics was still showcasing Atlas’ capabilities. Meantime, in lieu of a gold watch, Boston Dynamics is offering up a video featuring some of Atlas’ greatest hits and most spectacular falls.

GovDash’s Goal: Utilizing AI to Facilitate Business Success in Obtaining Government Contracts

After considering a few ideas, they decided to go after what they saw as a largely unaddressed market: Tools to help small businesses secure U.S. government contracts. “The federal contracting community has seen a shrinking of the small business industrial base for much of the past decade,” Doherty told TechCrunch. It’s also expensive for them to bid on contracts — if they don’t win, they may run out of cash.”As a result of labyrinthine systems and mountains of paperwork, finding and bidding for U.S. federal contracts is a laborious process. To attempt to give these small businesses a boost, Goltser, Mason and Doherty founded GovDash, a platform that provides workflows to support government contract capture, proposal, development and management processes. New York-based, six-employee GovDash currently works with around 30 federal contractors across the U.S., Doherty said, and is “nearly” cash-flow positive.

Rivos Strategizes Future Moves as Apple Lawsuit Lingers

ISAs are a technical spec at the foundation of every chip, describing how software controls the chip’s hardware. In addition to building the chip, Rivos is working on self-contained data center hardware based on the Open Compute Project modular standard, which will effectively serve as plug-and-play chip housing. Startups by the dozens, meanwhile, are angling for a slice of a custom data center chip market that could reach $10 billion this year and double by 2025. Habana Labs, the Intel-owned AI chip company, laid off an estimated 10% of its workforce last year. Kumar wouldn’t talk about customers, and Rivos’ chip isn’t anticipated to reach mass production until sometime next year.

Exploring Offending Generated Images on Instagram and Facebook: An Inquiry by Meta’s Oversight Committee

The Oversight Board, Meta’s semi-independent policy council, it turning its attention to how the company’s social platforms are handling explicit, AI-generated images. Tuesday, it announced investigations into two separate cases over how Instagram in India and Facebook in the U.S. handled AI-generated images of public figures after Meta’s systems fell short on detecting and responding to the explicit content. In other words, after two reports, the explicit AI-generated image remained on Instagram. The second case relates to Facebook, where a user posted an explicit, AI-generated image that resembled a U.S. public figure in a Group focusing on AI creations. Meta’s response and the next stepsIn response to the Oversight Board’s cases, Meta said it took down both pieces of content.

The Escalating Tension Between the US and China: Microsoft’s $1.5B Payment to G42

G42
As the Gulf region gains growing strategic importance for the tech war between the U.S. and China, Microsoft makes a big move into one of its richest oil countries. The minority stake will give Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice chair and president, a seat on G42’s board of directors. The funding comes amid U.S. politicians’ escalating concerns over G42’s ties with China. Given the two countries’ increasing economic ties, it’s no surprise that G42, the AI poster child of the UAE, has also forged ties with Chinese firms. Under the agreement, the Emirati company’s data platform and other key technology infrastructure will migrate to Microsoft Azure, which will power G42’s AI product development.

“Integrating AI-Focused Data Management and Differential Privacy: The Power of PVML”

PVML is offering an interesting solution by combining a ChatGPT-like tool for analyzing data with the safety guarantees of differential privacy. It’s much easier, faster and more efficient — and our secret sauce, differential privacy, enables this integration very easily.”Differential privacy is far from a new concept. The team argues that today’s data access solutions are ineffective and create a lot of overhead. The promise of using differential privacy means that PVML’s users don’t have to make changes to the original data. “That’s a taste of things to come, and organizations who adopt AI today will be a step ahead tomorrow.

Elon Musk’s Strategy to Monetize Posting for New X Users

Elon Musk is planning to charge new X users a small fee to enable posting on the social network and to curb the bot problem. Earlier this month, X said that the platform was starting a major purge of spam accounts, warning users that their follower count might be affected. However, with a plan to charge new users, the social media company seemingly aims to tackle the bot problem better. Earlier this month, xAI made its Grok chatbot available to Premium users of X, who pay $8 per month. Last week, Fortune reported that X plans to make Grok available to users to compose posts.

AI causes caution in investors

And more AI companies are receiving investments than ever before, with 1,812 AI startups announcing funding in 2023, up 40.6% versus 2022, according to the Stanford HAI report. “There’s been a more deliberate approach by investors in evaluating AI investments compared to a year ago. According to a PitchBook report compiled for TechCrunch, VCs invested $25.87 billion globally in AI startups in Q1 2024, up from $21.69 billion in Q1 2023. Despite the general malaise within AI investor circles, generative AI — AI that creates new content, such as text, images, music and videos — remains a bright spot. “We’ll soon be evaluating whether generative AI delivers the promised efficiency gains at scale and drives top-line growth through AI-integrated products and services,” Kumar said.

“Kode Labs’ Ambitious Goal: To be the Leading Force in Commercial Building Automation, Similar to Salesforce”

Like many immigrants, the New York City skyline was one of the first sights young brothers Edi and Etrit Demaj took in when they arrived in the U.S. over 20 years ago. “The first building that we saw was the Empire State Building,” Etrit recalls. The Demaj family soon settled in Detroit, where the brothers completed their education and started various companies, including their latest, Kode Labs, which integrates and automates various systems in commercial buildings — including the Empire State Building. When the Demaj brothers founded Kode in 2017, they sought to bring building management into the cloud era. The brothers liken it to an OS that integrates building systems like a computer OS integrates various circuit boards.

Adobe Also Joining the Race: Developing Generative Video Technology

Adobe's $20 Billion Figma Deal Faces Eu Probe
Offered as an answer of sorts to OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Imagen 2 and models from the growing number of startups in the nascent generative AI video space, Adobe’s model — a part of the company’s expanding Firefly family of generative AI products — will make its way into Premiere Pro, Adobe’s flagship video editing suite, sometime later this year, Adobe says. Like many generative AI video tools today, Adobe’s model creates footage from scratch (either a prompt or reference images) — and it powers three new features in Premiere Pro: object addition, object removal and generative extend. The lack of release time frame on the video model doesn’t instill a lot of confidence that it’ll avoid the same fate. And that, I’d say, captures the overall tone of Adobe’s generative video presser. Adobe’s clearly trying to signal with these announcements that it’s thinking about generative video, if only in the preliminary sense.
