“Roku Enforces Forced Arbitration: No Access to TVs or Streaming Devices Without User Consent”

Roku Glitch
Roku users around the country turned on their TVs this week to find an unpleasant surprise: the company required them to consent to an arbitration agreement in order to access their device. Users (at least, this user) received an email the day before saying that “we have made changes to our Dispute Resolution Terms, which describe how you can resolve disputes with Roku. We encourage you to read the updated Dispute Resolution Terms. But there really is something rather despicable about totally disabling a user’s device until they agree, and having basically anything the user does count as agreement. Don’t delay or, when people sue them over how they held devices hostage in order to coerce them into consumer-hostile dispute resolution terms, you won’t be able to join in on the fun.

Albedo Secures $35 Million in Funding for Groundbreaking Satellite Orbiting Technology

Albedo
In 2019, then-President Trump tweeted a detailed image of a heavily damaged Iranian launch pad captured by a classified military satellite. The image, which was declassified in 2022, revealed what many in the commercial Earth observation industry suspected: that U.S. defense had the ability to capture images at a staggeringly sharp 10-centimeter resolution. In comparison, the biggest optical imagery providers today collect images at a 30-centimeter resolution, which is algorithmically improved to 15 centimeters.) Now, the company says it has closed $35 million in Series A-1 financing, at an up round valuation. Right now, Albedo is working toward launch of its first commercial satellite in the first half of 2025.

Top executives report to the CEO, the CEO answers to the board, and the board serves at the whim of the shareholders. On Sunday evening, the oil supermajor filed a lawsuit in federal court asking for permission to ignore a shareholder resolution at its next annual meeting. The new shareholder resolution calls on the oil company to reduce its Scope 3 emissions or those that result from the use of its products. Other shareholders tended to be deferential to management, letting them run their business as they saw fit. But as shareholder primacy took root in the public consciousness, more shareholders began to exercise their rights.

Just ahead of CES, Qualcomm today announced the next generation of its Snapdragon XR platform, the aptly named XR2+ Gen 2. These include the Snapdragon AR chips, which, for example, power the Meta/Ray-Ban smart glasses. The line-up is a bit complicated, with the AR1 Gen 1 meant for smart glasses without a screen, the AR2 Gen 1 chips for AR-enabled smart glasses, as well as the XR1 and XR2 chips. The XR2+ Gen 2 is the new flagship of the series, besting the previously-released non-plus XR2 Gen 2, which “only” provided a 3k resolution. “Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 unlocks 4.3K resolution which will take XR productivity and entertainment to the next level by bringing spectacularly clear visuals to use cases such as room-scale screens, life-size overlays and virtual desktops,” said Hugo Swart, vice president and general manager of XR at Qualcomm.
