The latter has made snake robots a compelling addition to search-and-rescue teams, as the systems can squeeze into spots people and other robots can’t. That means a lot of ice, as NASA researchers are planning to send it to Saturn’s small, cold moon, Enceladus. Twenty-first-century flybys from Cassini have revealed a water-rich environment, making the ice-covered moon a potential candidate for life in our solar system. The eventual plan is to use the snake robot, Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor (EELS), to explore oceans beneath the moon’s crust and finally answer one of the universe’s big, open questions. In fact, CMU spinout HEBI Robotics designed the modules being used in this early version of the system.

“UNC System Implements Ban on Yik Yak, Fizz, Sidechat, and Whisper: The Latest Confrontation for Anonymous Social Platforms”

Anonymous Social Apps
Anonymous social apps tend to appeal to younger users and are often used for bad behavior like bullying, harassment, and online abuse. It seems every few years — and no matter how many times anonymous apps like these fail — someone, somewhere builds yet another anonymous social platform. Yik Yik, in fact, is on its second life. No matter how many times this trend is tried, standalone anonymous social apps aimed at consumers rarely lead to a sustainable business. Yik Yak, Sidechat, Whisper, and Fizz were asked for comment using public email addresses published on their websites and in their terms of service.

Just when you thought the hype about room-temperature superconductors was over, it’s not. Room-temperature superconductors, if one is ever found and independently confirmed, could revolutionize everything from electricity transmission to computing, electric vehicles, MRI machines, maglev trains and more. Lately, claims of room-temperature superconductivity seem to be blooming like flowers after a rainstorm. In the last year alone, three high-profile cases were either debunked, retracted or seriously doubted. Researchers who TechCrunch+ spoke with were skeptical that this new material is a room-temperature superconductor.

The Academic Exodus of Artificial Intelligence Mindsets

According to Stanford’s 2021 Artificial Intelligence Index Report, the number of new AI Ph.D. graduates in North America entering the AI industry post-graduation grew from 44.4% in 2010 to around 48% in 2019. By contrast, the share of new AI Ph.D.s entering academia dropped by 44% from 42.1% in 2010 to 23.7% in 2019. Private industry’s willingness to pay top dollar for AI talent is likely a contributing factor. While AI graduates are no doubt welcoming the trend — who wouldn’t kill for a starting salary that high? Between 2004 and 2019, Carnegie Mellon alone saw 16 AI faculty members depart, and the Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Washington lost roughly a dozen each, the study found.
