True Anomaly, a pioneering startup at the forefront of space and defense technology, has just secured an impressive $100 million in new funding. This solidifies the fact that the interest in companies operating in the dynamic world of space and defense is showing no signs of slowing down.
This significant round of financing was led by Riot Ventures, and included notable contributions from Eclipse, ACME Capital, Menlo Ventures, Narya, 645 Ventures, Rocketship.vc, Champion Hill Ventures and FiveNine Ventures. As stated in their press release, these funds will be utilized to further expand and enhance all facets of the business.
True Anomaly seeks to bridge a crucial gap in space situational awareness and defensive operations through the development of cutting-edge software and hardware. This includes their groundbreaking line of autonomous spacecraft, named Jackals, which have the capability to undertake complex operations and rendezvous in space. These vehicles are equipped with a range of advanced sensors and cameras, enabling them to surveil and gather data on objects in space. Furthermore, the company has created a revolutionary integrated operating platform called Mosaic, which will eventually work seamlessly in conjunction with the on-orbit Jackals.
“Our goal is to close the information asymmetry that currently exists between the United States and its adversaries in space,” stated True Anomaly CEO, Evan Rogers, in previous interviews with TechCrunch.
This statement underscores the critical importance of True Anomaly’s work in space domain awareness. By developing innovative technologies such as Jackal and Mosaic, the startup aims to level the playing field and help the U.S. stay ahead in this rapidly evolving space race.
Founded in 2022 by a team of former Space Force members, True Anomaly has made significant progress in a short period of time. Their accomplishments include the establishment of a state-of-the-art 35,000-square foot facility in Centennial, Colorado and an impressive doubling of their workforce to over 100 employees.
In September, the company secured a $17.4 million contract with the U.S. Space Force, tasked with creating a suite of space domain awareness capabilities. This includes assisting in the location and tracking of objects in space, analyzing and gathering information on these objects, and utilizing artificial intelligence to predict and identify any changes in their behavior.
The first two Jackal spacecraft are scheduled to launch in March, as part of SpaceX’s Transporter-10 rideshare mission. In a major achievement, True Anomaly received regulatory approval to carry out non-Earth imaging and demonstrate in-space rendezvous and proximity operations with these two spacecraft. Undoubtedly, this demonstration mission will be closely observed by both the tech community in Silicon Valley and the government in Washington.
