Earlier this month, U.S. prosecutors from the Department of Justice called for a “necessary” 40 to 50-year sentence for him. Prior to its collapse, FTX was one of the top crypto exchanges by volume, behind Coinbase and Binance. Bankman-Fried testified that he didn’t defraud FTX customers or use their funds, but that Alameda “borrowed” that capital from the exchange. Prosecutors strongly argued Bankman-Fried made a number of false promises internally and externally and was responsible for the loss of billions of dollars for thousands of FTX investors. And as a result, Bankman-Fried will be spending quite some time behind bars.

With TikTok potentially poised for a U.S. ban, YouTube is touting how well its own TikTok competitor, YouTube Shorts, is paying off for creators. TikTok’s year-old fund, which replaced TikTok’s $1 billion Creator Fund, is now exiting beta. YouTube first introduced monetization options for Shorts creators in September 2022, with its plans for expanding the YouTube Partner Progam (YPP). But starting in early 2023, Shorts creators could meet a new threshold of 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views over 90 days. What’s more, YouTube notes that creators participating in the partner program for Shorts often monetize in other ways, as well.

“The top use of Nextdoor is people looking for providers, HVAC especially,” Laufer told TechCrunch. PipeDreams has purchased nine companies so far and currently operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Tucson, and Denver with plans to expand. “The beauty of this industry is it’s massive, there are over 100,000 businesses doing plumbing and HVAC,” Laufer said about the U.S. market. Laufer said owning the HVAC companies outright is what differentiates PipeDreams from other competitors looking to just connect consumers with professionals, like Angie and Thumbtack. PipeDreams is also addressing the skills shortage in the HVAC and plumbing industries, as Gen Z is less interested in learning trades then generations before them.

The total number of monthly active crypto developers fell 25% year-over-year in 2023, but those who have been in the space long-term showed more resilience than before, according to a new developer report by Electric Capital. Developers with more than two years of experience in crypto are at an all-time high after reaching 51% annualized growth over the past five years, according to the report. And developers who have been in crypto for at least one year grew 15% year-over-year and comprise 63% of all monthly active developers. When you see devs stick around decorrelated from prices, there’s something fundamentally here that keeps them in the space.”The number of developers working in crypto has matched what Shen has experienced since entering the space in 2018. “Newcomers are very correlated with prices,” Shen said.

Just a few weeks after its most recent round of layoffs, Unity is once again reducing its workforce. Unity is the maker of a video game engine that is widely used in the video game industry. Under the old pricing scheme, indie developers who earn less than $100,000 per year would be able to use Unity for free. Bigger video game studios would have to pay $1,900 per user per year. And yet, that controversy had some wide-ranging consequences as many developers lost faith in the game engine company.

Apple has agreed to pay out $25 million to settle a class action lawsuit over its Family Sharing feature, which lets users and up to five of their family members share access to apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books that they purchase. The lawsuit, which was first filed in 2019, alleged that “Apple misrepresented the ability to use its Family Sharing feature to share subscriptions to apps.”The news was first reported by MacRumors. Court documents from the lawsuit allege that Apple advertised Family Sharing on as an option on apps that did not support Family Sharing. “The vast majority of subscription-based Apps, which is a growing percentage of Apple Apps, cannot be shared with designated family members,” the court document reads. All or virtually all of these Apps, however, included the statement that they support Family Sharing on their landing pages through January 30, 2019.”The lawsuit alleges that Apple was aware that the subscription-based apps did not support Family Sharing, but still placed an ad for Family Sharing on them.
