Hours later, Musk posted on X that a “Tesla Robotaxi” will be unveiled August 8. Tesla Robotaxi unveil on 8/8 — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 5, 2024Reports have swirled for years that Tesla was working on these two vehicles. Musk has been promising autonomous capabilities in Tesla vehicles for years. Tesla vehicles come standard with a driver-assistance system branded as Autopilot. Tesla vehicles are not self-driving.

Autonomy of Ghost, Supported by OpenAI, Ceases Operations

Ghost Autonomy, a startup working on autonomous driving software for automaker partners, has shut down, TechCrunch has learned. “We are proud of the substantial technical innovations and progress the Ghost team made on its mission to deliver software-defined consumer autonomy,” the note on its website reads. “The path to long-term profitability was uncertain given the current funding climate and long-term investment required for autonomy development and commercialization. We are exploring potential long-term destinations for our team’s innovations.”The shutdown comes just five months since the startup partnered with OpenAI through the OpenAI Startup Fund to gain early access to OpenAI systems and Azure resources from Microsoft. Like so many startups trying to commercialize autonomous vehicle technology, Ghost has shifted its approach over the years.

“Orbital Repairs in Motion: Gitai’s Autonomous Robot Installs Panel on the ISS”

Los Angeles-based Gitai said Tuesday that its autonomous robotic arm has nailed a tech demonstration outside the International Space Station. Autonomous robotic systems still have a ways to go before they render human labor obsolete, especially here on Earth; but in space, human labor is expensive (and dangerous), which provides an opening for a robotic alternative. The 1.5-meter autonomous robotic arm, which the startup calls S2, launched to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 in January. In the nearer term, the company is targeting on-orbit satellite servicing for spacecraft in low Earth orbit and geostationary orbit. The arm’s technology readiness level (TLR), a standard used by NASA to chart the maturity of technology, is now at 7, the highest level, Gitai said.

Yet another startup for self-driving cars closes down, Zoox widens its driverless trials, and interest in AI among investors intensifies.

Zoox Robotaxi Driving Down A Road In Las Vegas
Deal of the weekIf you’re looking for yet another example of investor enthusiasm for AI just take a look at the latest fundraise over at autonomous vehicle software company Applied Intuition. Other deals that got my attention …Anaphite, a battery technology startup, raised £1.6 million ($2 million)via a government-backed grant investment led by Elbow Beach Capital. Motional, the autonomous vehicle technology startup Motional, secured a bridge loan that provides a temporary financial reprieve as the company searches for a longer-term source of funding, TechCrunch exclusively learned. Phantom Auto, a remote driving startup that launched seven years ago amid the buzz of autonomous vehicle technology, shut down after failing to secure new funding. You might recall that VW’s autonomous vehicle ambitions were wrapped up in Argo AI, a startup backed solely by the automaker and partner Ford.

Motional, Supported by Hyundai, Secures Financial Leverage with Bridge Financing

Autonomous vehicle technology startup Motional has secured a bridge loan that provides a temporary financial reprieve as the company searches for a longer-term source of funding, TechCrunch has learned. Motional CEO Karl Iagnemma told staff in a companywide email viewed by TechCrunch that the company’s board of directors approved the bridge financing. After a wave of consolidation and shutdowns in the nascent autonomous vehicle industry, Motional is one of the few companies left that’s still pursuing a commercial robotaxi service. The company operates an autonomous vehicle taxi service in Las Vegas (still with human safety operators behind the wheel) on Uber, Lyft and Via platforms. The autonomous vehicle company last had layoffs in December 2022, when it cut about 10% of its workforce.

The Launch of Cypher’s Inventory Drone from an Autonomous Mobile Robot Base

The halls of Modex this week are lousy with solutions to the problem of inventory. Recent years have given us drone solutions and Dexory’s massive AMR (autonomous mobile robot) with a telescoping scaffolding structure. At its core is a tall (but not Dexory tall) AMR that serves as a launching and landing pad for a drone. You can’t really see it from the image I took, but the drone is actually tethered to the inside of the AMR platform. The Ottawa-based firm says the drone can operate for up to five hours before needing to return to the base for a recharge.

Phantom Auto, a Remote Driving Startup, Announces Closure

Phantom Auto, a remote driving startup that launched seven years ago amid the buzz of autonomous vehicle technology, is shutting down after failing to secure new funding, TechCrunch has learned. Phantom Auto, which had cut staff last year, employed a little more than 100 people as of this week. Phantom Auto’s demise is the latest in a long line of startups that popped up as the autonomous vehicle technology industry gained attention and investment from investors. Phantom Auto was founded in 2017 and initially focused on applying its teleops technology to autonomous vehicles on public roadways such as robotaxis and self-driving trucks. Phantom Auto pivoted in 2019 and started shopping its remote driving system to logistics, specifically forklifts and yard trucks that have no autonomy as well as autonomous sidewalk delivery robots.

AI-Powered Autonomous Vehicle Software by Applied Intuition Secures $6 Billion Valuation

Applied Intuition Adas Sensorsim
Autonomous vehicle software company Applied Intuition has raised $250 million in a round that values the startup at $6 billion, as it pushes to bring more artificial intelligence to the automotive, defense, construction and agriculture sectors. The eye-popping funding round is the latest example of investor fervor for AI. Lux Capital, Elad Gil, and Andreessen Horowitz all previously led funding rounds for Applied Intuition. Founded in 2017, Applied Intuition creates software that automakers and others use to develop autonomous vehicle solutions. “When they think like, ‘I have this software or AI problem,’ we generally want them to think about us,” Younis says.

Navy to Begin Testing Saildrone’s Inaugural Aluminum Surveyor Autonomous Vessel Splashdown

Saildrone Sd 3000 1
Ocean intelligence company Saildrone has just put the first of a new generation of Surveyor autonomous vessels in the water: an aluminum version that the Navy is keen to take advantage of. Founder and CEO Richard Jenkins told TechCrunch that the demand for vessels like SailDrone’s is only growing. So far, no one has suggested weaponizing the Saildrone vessels, though. The Austal line is expected to be able to put out one Surveyor every six weeks to start with. SD-3000 and a few of its in-progress aluminum kin will be detailed to Navy testing of its capability of producing “surface and undersea intelligence for a range of high-priority applications, including anti-submarine warfare.”

“Waymo Unveils Autonomous Rides for Staff in Austin”

Waymo will start letting its autonomous vehicles traverse Austin without a safety operator behind the wheel as of tomorrow, a crucial step before the company opens the program up to the public. The company announced Tuesday that it will begin shuttling employees around 43 square miles of the Texas capital, including the Barton Hills, Riverside, East Austin and Hyde Park neighborhoods, as well as downtown Austin. Waymo didn’t offer a timeline for when it plans to start offering autonomous rides to the citizens of Austin. Waymo continues to steadily expand its autonomous ride-hailing program, which it calls Waymo One, even as other companies in the space have struggled. Just last month, one of the company’s autonomous vehicles collided with a cyclist in San Francisco — an incident that the California Department of Motor Vehicles is investigating.
