“Enhance Your Handwriting on iPadOS 18 with the Intelligent Script Feature for the Apple Pencil”

Apple announced at WWDC on Monday that iPadOS 18 will include a new “Smart Script” feature that will clean up your handwriting when using an Apple Pencil to write in Notes. With Smart Script, Apple says it’s making handwriting your notes even smoother and straighter. The feature improves the appearance of your writing as you write by using on-device machine learning to recreate your handwriting from your notes. If you need to add to something you have already written, you can tap and hold with your Apple Pencil to create more space. Apple says Smart Script makes your handwritten notes more effective, fluid and easer to read.

The Consequences of Failed Startups: How These Ventures Take Charge in Salvaging Their Business

The big storyLast week, I wrote about two startups — Sunset and SimpleClosure — that help other startups shut down raising capital. It was a deep dive into how and why this business has become one that is so sought after by investors. I also covered Stripe’s tender offer that resulted in a 30% higher bump in valuation — to $65 billion — for the payments giant. She emphasized, though, that the company had not made any cuts as a consequence of launching this AI assistant. Embat, a Spanish fintech which does what they call “real-time treasury management,” closed a financing round of $16 million Series A led by Creandum.

“Saintly: The Heavenly Choice for a Spotless Fohm”

Wet wipes are great for your tush, but awful for the environment. For a few years, the startup Fohm had a solution: a specially formulated soap that can be dispensed onto toilet paper, turning them into wet wipes that can be disposed of safely in the toilet. With a mission to provide an eco-friendly alternative to traditional wet wipes, Fohm, now rebranded as Saintly, has been bringing up the rear (ahem), in an effort to address the environmental and infrastructural issues caused by microplastic-based wet wipes. By introducing a foam-based cleansing solution, Fohm offered a novel approach to personal hygiene that was both skin and eco-friendly. The Saintly Dispenser Kit is $99 on subscription or $109 as a one-time purchase.

“Revival of Hydrogen: Insights from CES 2024”

At least, CES 2024 suggests it is Hyundai, Nikola, Bosch and others are seriously pushing fuel cells, but why now? At CES, Nikola finally showed off one of its first US-built hydrogen trucks that it’s starting to ship to customers. The rides included a small train “capable of being powered by hydrogen energy” and an “AI fortune teller.”Why now? For one, the 2022 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law put $9.5 billion towards “clean hydrogen initiatives” to create hydrogen production “hubs” across the U.S. For example, Shell, BP, Chevron and ExxonMobil are all members of a lobbying group called the Clean Hydrogen Future Coalition.

Snowflake’s Data Clean Room Enhancements: An Overview of the Samooha Acquisition

“Samooha customers will benefit from the many built-in platform capabilities of Snowflake, as well as the powerful network of Snowflake data cloud. Snowflake customers, meanwhile, will be able to more quickly and easily build, connect and use data clean rooms where their data already lives, directly in Snowflake.”Los Altos-based Samooha, which Sivaramakrishnan and Bhowmick co-founded in 2022, competes in an increasingly crowded data clean room field. AWS has a data clean room product, as do startups like Herb. A native app on Snowflake, Samooha provides a no-code UI customers can use to access and build clean room apps. According to Gartner, 80% of advertisers spending more than $1 billion a year on media will have used data clean rooms for applications such as analytics, measuring campaign results and easing data integration by the end of the year.

“Preparing for a Greener Future: Developing the Workforce for Clean Energy”

Innovation in clean tech and renewable energy is moving fast — maybe a bit too fast. The clean tech industry is expected to create 8 million jobs by the end of 2030, according to a recent report by the International Energy Agency. These numbers are apparently based on current policies, and if more resources go toward the clean energy transition, the report’s authors expect the number to rise, too. The startup hires and trains folks to install and maintain sustainable heat pumps. It trains people new to the trades, provides upskilling training to those who have some experience, and has its workers install and maintain equipment for other companies.
