==== Researchers discover high vulnerability of commonly used video doorbells to hacking

Eken Doorbell
These doorbell cameras are, however, still available elsewhere. Consumer Reports says EKEN did not respond to their emails reporting these issues. Despite these flaws and Consumer Reports warning online marketplaces about them, the doorbells remain available for sale on Amazon, Sears, and Shein. But Consumer Reports claimed there are similar doorbells, likely whitelabels of EKEN doorbells, still available on Walmart. After TechCrunch shared five listings flagged by Consumer Reports with Walmart, Forrest said the company took down three of the five, while two had already been removed.

“New Accusations of Privacy Coercion Emerge Against Meta’s EU Data Collection Scheme”

As we’ve reported before Meta’s self-serving ‘consent or cough up’ offer is already facing a number of other GDPR complaints. Today’s complaints are not the first filed against Meta’s consent or pay tactic by consumer protection groups — some of which argue it’s breaching the bloc’s rules on consumer protection, too. However its blog post defending the controversial tactic does not make any mention of how it complies with EU consumer protection law. So another very pertinent question, vis-a-vis Meta’s consent or pay offer in the EU, is what the Commission will do? *The BEUC members filing GDPR complaints against Meta are: CECU, dTest, EKPIZO, Forbrugerrådet Tænk, Forbrukerrådet, Poprad, Spoločnosť ochrany spotrebiteľov (S.O.S.

HTC Vive Transforms into an Enterprise Solution Unnoticed by Many

Vive Xr Elite 1920
A lot has changed at HTC in the decade since a small team broke off to form its mixed reality division. These days, the mixed reality business comprises the “vast majority” of HTC’s global business, says Dan O’Brien. Ultimately, however, the consumer business has shrunk dramatically relative to its enterprise offerings. In recent years, Vive has expanded from a VR focus to mixed reality, utilizing passthrough technology similar to the kind found on the Vision Pro. We’re not there yet, but we definitely see that helping to develop the virtual reality space.

Deadline for Ai Pin delayed to mid-April due to compassionate decision

First-generation products from new startups are notoriously so, regardless of how much money and excitement you’ve managed to drum up. Given all that, it’s likely few are too surprised that Humane’s upcoming Ai Pin has been pushed back a bit, from March to “mid-April,” per a new video from the Bay Area startup’s Head of Media, Sam Sheffer. The Ai Pin was finally unveiled at an event in San Francisco back in early November, where we were able to spend a little controlled hands-on time with the wearable. Humane is positioning its product as the next step for a space that’s been stuck on the smartphone form factor for more than a decade. The Ai Pin is currently available for preorder at $699.

An increasing consumer appetite for sustainable packaging is powering a new wave of startupsWith the packaging market being valued at as much as €1 trillion globally it’s become a ripe field for startups to engage this market with digital products that can bring efficiency to a highly traditional industry. This is perhaps why Packmatic, a Berlin-based digital packaging marketplace has raised a €15 million Series A round led by EQT Ventures. These packaging startups tend to be attacking the same kinds of problems for both businesses and consumers. Packmatic says its marketplace network of over 300 packaging suppliers across Europe, is able to match large companies and FMCG brands with specialized packaging suppliers. Key to this is accessing sustainable packaging.

“Unicorn Rising: The Anticipated Return of Consumer Tech”

Consumer tech is bound for a comeback among unicorns, but maybe not just yetTen years after Cowboy Ventures’ founder Aileen Lee gave unicorns their nickname, she and her team are back with fresh analysis on private companies worth more than $1 billion. As the number of unicorns boomed from 39 to more than 532, Cowboy found that their very nature also changed. “The pendulum swung hard to enterprise, with 78% of unicorns today focused on B2B, the inverse of 2013,” Lee and her team member Allegra Simon wrote. But spending more than a decade in tech teaches you something: to be ready for the pendulum to swing back. Hence Cowboy’s prediction that “given the hard shift to enterprise,” we can “hope and expect more exciting consumer unicorns will be born in coming years.”

Implementing Efforts to Strengthen the Financial Performance of Consumer Tech Investors: A Shift towards Unit Economics Improvement

Blue Candy With Colorful Red Chocolates
A slew of consumer tech and companies focused on consumer packaged goods (CPG) have gobbled up venture capital in the past year. Keychain, Harmonya, Highlight, Ramani, SupplyPike, Vividly and Turing Labs, just to name a few, captured investor attention for their technologies. That’s because consumers’ tastes constantly change, grocery shelf space is finite and e-commerce takes finesse to cut through the noise. But why are investors so interested in consumer tech and CPG as an opportunity now? Oreo is going to need to know whether Oreo A or Oreo B tastes better, and that’s not something that generative AI can spit out.

Previewing CES 2024: Anticipating What’s to Come

Ces 2024 Splash
It’s all a distant memory for tech companies looking to assert themselves as leading innovators for the coming year. In spite of the aforementioned ongoing health issues, I’m actually kind of looking forward to this CES. Speaking of robotics (as I often am), CES has been dipping its toes in those waters for a few years now. Over the past several years, LG has made the strategic decision to announce its biggest products ahead of CES. Bookmark our CES 2024 page for the latest.

Tesla’s Autopilot Recall Fix Deemed Inadequate by Consumer Reports

Tesla Model S Steering Yoke
Tesla’s fix for its Autopilot recall of more than 2 million vehicles is being called “insufficient” by Consumer Reports, following preliminary tests. While the testing isn’t comprehensive, it shows questions remain unanswered about Tesla’s approach to driver monitoring — the tech at the heart of the recall. It focused heavily on the Autosteer feature, which is designed to keep a car centered in a lane on controlled-access highways, even around curves. But NHTSA said in documents released last week that it viewed those checks as “insufficient to prevent misuse.”Tesla does not restrict the use of Autosteer to controlled-access highways, though. “None of this is very prescriptive or explicit in terms of what it is they’re going to [change],” Funkhouser says.
