Apple announced a deal with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot experience, to a range of its devices. Here’s a roundup of a few of the more noteworthy Apple AI announcements from WWDC 2024. New SiriSiri got a makeover courtesy of Apple’s overarching generative AI push this year, called Apple Intelligence. To take advantage of the new Siri, you’ll need an Apple device that supports Apple Intelligence — specifically the iPhone 15 Pro and devices with M1 or newer chips. Apple Intelligence will have an understanding of who you’re chatting with, Apple says — so if you want to personalize the chat with a custom AI image, you can do so on the fly.

Elon Musk Issues Ultimatum: Ban on Apple Devices for Companies in Response to Apple’s ChatGPT Integration

Elon Musk is threatening to ban iPhones from all his companies over the newly announced OpenAI integrations Apple announced at WWDC 2024 on Monday. This allows users to get an answer from ChatGPT without having to open the ChatGPT iOS app. Apple also announced another integration that would allow users have access to ChatGPT system-wide within Writing Tools via a “compose” feature. That’s great news for OpenAI, which will soon have a massive influx of requests from Apple users. Apple users may not understand the nuances of the privacy issues here, of course — which is what Musk is counting on by making these complaints.

Siri got a makeover at Apple’s WWDC 2024 in Cupertino, courtesy of the tech giant’s overarching generative AI push this year. Siri is now more natural, more relevant and more personal — and it has new look, including a revamped icon. Siri will also have the ability to take action in and across apps, so you can ask Siri to “make this photo pop” and then “add this photo” to another app. That’s thanks to the new App Intents API, which allows devs to let Siri take actions in their apps, and the upgraded Siri’s awareness of personal context including messages, calendar events, files and photos. Apple gave the example of Siri finding a photo of your license, extracting your ID number and entering it into a web form for you.

The Find My Device Network, which is similar to Apple’s Find My network, works with devices running Android 9+. The new Find My Device network also integrates with Nest smart home gadgets and shows a lost device’s proximity to home Nest devices. “Multi-layered protections built into the Find My Device network help keep you safe and your personal information private, while keeping you in control of the devices connected to the Find My Device network.

Hailo receives $120 million funding to continue competing against Nvidia amidst struggles faced by other AI chip startups

The funding climate for AI chip startups, once as sunny as a mid-July day, is beginning to cloud over as Nvidia asserts its dominance. AI chip company Mythic ran out of cash in 2022 and was nearly forced to halt operations, while Graphcore, a once-well-capitalized rival, now faces mounting losses. But one startup appears to have found success in the ultra-competitive — and increasingly crowded — AI chip space. “I co-founded Hailo with the mission to make high-performance AI available at scale outside the realm of data centers,” Danon told TechCrunch. “In recent years, we’ve seen a surge in demand for edge AI applications in most industries ranging from airport security to food packaging,” he said.

Microsoft’s Latest Surface Devices Grant Copilot Exclusive Access Key

Surface Pro Keyboard With Bold Keyset
What’s been billed as a Windows event is, predictably, focused on AI efforts, with Copilot taking the wheel. The new Surface Pro 10 for Business and Surface Laptop 6 for Business both sport a devoted Copilot key wedged between the Alt key and arrows. At the end of the day, a Copilot key is simply a physical shortcut that surfaces one particular service. That the key has been added to a pair of business-focused devices highlights how much the company is considering Copilot an important enterprise play. The Surface Pro 10 for Business sports a 13-inch touchscreen, powered by either the Intel Core Ultra 5 or 7 and the Intel AI Boost NPU.
