Last month, a hacker wreaked havoc during an esports tournament of the popular shooter game Apex Legends, hacking two well-known streamers mid-game to make it look like they were using cheats.
“The exploit I’ve used in [Apex Legends Global Series] is fully patched,” the hacker who goes by Destroyer2009 said in an online chat.

A new app called Buffet is aiming to address the loneliness epidemic by helping users meet new people by quickly matching them with a person and a place to meet up (Think Tinder + OpenTable).
Buffet aims to help users meet likeminded individuals, whether they’re looking for a new friend, romantic partner or gym buddy.
So we put one foot in front of the other and stared building Buffet.”To get started with Buffet, users enter five of their interests, such as motorcycles, horseback riding or reading.
Buffet encourages people to go beyond a chatbox and digital communication and actually meet up in the real world.
Hacking believes that if Buffet can win over the average 25-year-old female professional, it can win over anyone.

Video game giant Activision is investigating a hacking campaign that’s targeting players with the goal of stealing their credentials, TechCrunch has learned.
Somehow, the hackers are getting malware on the victim’s computers and then stealing passwords for their gaming accounts and crypto wallets, among others, according to sources.
Zeebler described the effort as an “infostealer malware campaign,” where malware designed as legitimate-looking software unknowingly installed by the victim surreptitiously steals their usernames and passwords.
Zeebler told TechCrunch that he found out about the hacking campaign when a PhantomOverlay customer had their account for the cheat software stolen.
After that, Zeebler said he contacted Activision Blizzard as well as other cheat makers, whose users appear to be affected.

On Tuesday, Respawn, the studio that develops Apex Legends posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), addressing the incidents.
Conor Ford, who works on Apex Legends security team, wrote on X that he and his colleagues are working to address the issues.

The Pokemon Company said it detected hacking attempts against some of its users and reset those user account passwords.
A spokesperson for the company said there was no breach, just a series of hacking attempts against some users.
To protect our customers we have reset some passwords which prompted the message,” said Daniel Benkwitt, a Pokemon Company spokesperson.
The description of the Pokemon account breaches sounds like credential stuffing, where malicious hackers use usernames and passwords stolen from other breaches and reuse them on other sites.
For its part, the Pokemon Company does not allow its users to enable two-factor on their accounts, when TechCrunch checked.

On Friday, Microsoft said Russian government hackers continue to break into its systems using information obtained during a hack last year.
This time, the Russian hackers dubbed Midnight Blizzard have targeted Microsoft’s source code and other internal systems, the company said.
This has included access to some of the company’s source code repositories and internal systems,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post.
This new intrusion comes after Microsoft revealed in January that Russian government hackers had broken into the company’s systems last November.
Midnight Blizzard is believed to be a hacking group working for Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, known by its Russian initials, SVR.

Over the weekend, someone posted a cache of files and documents apparently stolen from the Chinese government hacking contractor, I-Soon.
This leak gives cybersecurity researchers and rival governments an unprecedented chance to look behind the curtain of Chinese government hacking operations facilitated by private contractors.
Since then, observers of Chinese hacking operations have feverishly poured over the files.
Also, an IP address found in the I-Soon leak hosted a phishing site that the digital rights organization Citizen Lab saw used against Tibetans in a hacking campaign in 2019.
Cary highlighted the documents and chats that show how much — or how little — I-Soon employees are paid.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise said on Wednesday that its cloud-based email system was compromised by Midnight Blizzard, a Russia-linked hacking group that recently broke into Microsoft’s corporate network.
Midnight Blizzard is a notorious hacking group that is widely believed to be sponsored by the Russian government.
HPE said an internal investigation has since determined that the Russia-backed hacking group “accessed and exfiltrated data” from a “small percentage” of HPE mailboxes starting in May 2023.
“The accessed data is limited to information contained in the users’ mailboxes,” Bauer told TechCrunch.
“We don’t have the details of the incident that Microsoft experienced and disclosed last week, so we’re unable to link the two at this time,” Bauer told TechCrunch.
