Gorilla, a Belgian company that serves the energy sector with real-time data and analytics for pricing and forecasting, has raised €23 million ($25 million) in a Series B round led by U.S. venture capital firm Headline. Founded in 2018, Antwerp-based Gorilla works with energy providers across Europe, the U.S. and Australia, including British Gas’ parent Centrica, Shell Energy, and Atlanta, Georgia-based Gas South. Throw into the mix geopolitical factors such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, ever-evolving regulations, increasingly distributed energy sources across fossil and renewables, and the increasing use of connected technology, and we now have fertile ground for data-focused energy startups to flourish. “No one knows what the energy sector will look like 10 years from now,” Gorilla’s co-founder and CEO, Ruben Van den Bossche, said in a statement. Other participants in the round include the startup’s existing investors Beringea and Belgian private equity firm, PMV.

Transforming Retailers into Service Providers: The success of pivoting in Dealt’s case study.

The company first started working with Mr. Bricolage, a popular DIY retailer in France. Dealt operates a white-label platform for Mr. Bricolage so that it can upsell its own clients with services. After that, retailers like Mr. Bricolage can provide services and generate new revenue lines as they take a cut on each transaction. Other Dealt clients include Fnac-Darty, Orange, E.Leclerc, Conforama, Boulanger, 3Suisses and Rue du Commerce. Some of these retailers work with Dealt to provide services that aren’t necessarily related to a new purchase.

AWS Emulates Google’s Lead by Declaring Unrestricted Free Data Transfers to Alternative Cloud Vendors

Amazon’s cloud computing subsidiary AWS has revealed that it will allow customers to transfer their data out of its ecosystem with no so-called “egress fees” attached. While AWS already allows customers to transfer up to 100GB of data per month off its servers for free, this won’t cover companies looking to “lift and shift” their entire data stores to another provider — and that is what is effectively changing for AWS customers as of today. Companies that want to move their data off of AWS are requested to contact AWS, which will then apparently issue credits for the data being migrated. It’s not clear what today’s news means in relation to the U.K.’s ongoing antitrust probe into cloud lock-in practices. Another issue identified by the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) was also looking at interoperability, concerning areas where cloud companies design their products to not play nicely with rival services.

Congressional Memo: Neutron Launch Readiness ‘Misrepresented’ by Rocket Lab

Rocket Lab Electron Wallops Launch
An internal congressional memo viewed by TechCrunch casts strong doubt on Rocket Lab’s claim that its Neutron rocket will be ready for launch in time to meet a crucial contract deadline from the Space Force. In response to industry feedback, Space Systems Command changed its procurement strategy for the next batch of national security launch contracts to accommodate newer launch providers. Neutron is Rocket Lab’s medium-lift vehicle and is being added as a complement to its successful small Electron rocket. Uncertainties around Archimedes’ hot fire tests are “the biggest issue” in Rocket Lab’s claims, the memo argues. It also highlights proprietary timelines shared by other launch providers that suggest there is much work left to be included in RFPs by the VCSFA.

MoneyHash secures $4.5M in funding for innovative payment orchestration platform benefiting MENA merchants

The payment landscape in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region is marked by significant fragmentation, with numerous payment providers and methods in each country, evolving regulations and diverse customer preferences. This complexity is further compounded by challenges such as payment fraud, low checkout conversion rates, and high transaction failure rates. Payment orchestration platforms streamline payment processes for merchants through unified payment APIs. As merchants or companies launch their platforms, they often start by collaborating with one or two payment processing providers. As their operations grow and expand into multiple regions, they onboard additional payment providers to meet their evolving needs.

Google today announced that it’ll stop charging Google Cloud customers a fee to migrate their data to another cloud provider or on-premise datacenter, effective immediately. Customers using Google Cloud services including BigQuery, Cloud Bigtable, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, Datastore, Filestore, Spanner and Persistent Disk are eligible for free transfers out of Google Cloud — but must first apply for approval through a form. Only once an approved customer’s data has been transferred out of Google Cloud and they’ve terminated their cloud written agreement will the data transfer fee will be waived (via a bill credit). According to an IDC survey, 99% of cloud storage users have incurred egress fees averaging 6% of their cloud storage costs. In 2018, Cloudflare launched the Bandwidth Alliance, a group of companies pledging to reduce or eliminate data egress fees.

Parallel Learning is solving that problem with a teletherapy platform that partners with school districts to create individualized plans for each student. Parallel’s providers work with a school’s special education program (SPED) to develop a Individualized Education Program (IEP), a legal document in the United States that outlines the personalized education plan for a student with special needs. Then when the pandemic hit and schools began struggling to serve their students, Heldfond knew it was time to bring her idea to fruition. One of the main problems Parallel addresses is the shortage of behavioral and special education providers that work with children. The company partners with K-12 public school districts, reaching out to special education directors, superintendents and others.

The Chinese Ministry of Transport recently unveiled a set of trial guidelines for autonomous vehicle services like robotaxis, self-driving trucks and robobuses. The rules also specify the requirements for safety operators at various degrees of automation. Autonomous cargo trucks should “in principle” be equipped with in-car safety operators. Robotaxis with advanced automation should have one in-car safety operator. They should also establish an agreement with the vehicle manufacturers and safety operators on the respective party’s scope of responsibilities.
