Artemis Moon Missions Postponed by NASA to Allow SpaceX and Other Companies Additional Time for Technological Advancements

Hls Eva Apr2020
NASA is pushing back the next two Artemis missions to the moon — including the first crewed lunar mission in over fifty years — by around twelve months in order to give commercial partners more time to develop their technology. The date of the fourth Artemis mission remains unchanged on September 2028. That’s because SpaceX must also develop in-orbit refueling capabilities, as the architecture involves Starship refueling in space before picking up the astronauts. After delivering astronauts to the moon, the Starship HLS must then launch from the surface before docking with Orion. NASA officials also outlined a handful of issues they discovered after the demonstration launch of SLS in late 2022.

“ABL Space Systems Aims for $100M in Fresh Funding as Regulatory Documentation is Unveiled”

Abl Space
ABL Space Systems is looking to raise up to $100 million in new funding, and has just closed over $40 million, according to a new filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. It’s the first indication that ABL has raised venture funding since October 2021, when the launch company closed $200 million at a $2.4 billion valuation. Together, they’re meant to provide a mobile, all-in-one launch system. However, the overall launch site layer represents a weak link.”Unsurprisingly, they argue that GS0 is the solution to this vulnerability, offering both a launch mount and a site system in a “proliferated” architecture. “It was not in our plans to have RS1 grounded for most of 2023,” O’Hanley wrote after the launch.

“Successful Moon Landing in Jeopardy: Astrobotic’s Peregrine Lander Experiences Propulsion Issue”

Peregrine Astrobotic
In a devastating series of updates earlier today, the Pittsburgh-based startup said a “failure within the propulsion system” is causing a critical loss of propellant. The propulsion system is a critical component of a spacecraft, but it’s especially important for this mission, which is taking an indirect path to the moon. NASA, likely sensing the difficulty of a moon landing, has issues awards to multiple companies under the program. Other awardees include Intuitive Machines, which is set to make its own lunar landing attempt next month, and Firefly Aerospace, which will conduct its first lunar mission later this year. A deputy administrator from NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Joel Kearns, said in a statement after launch that “each success and setback are opportunities to learn and grow.

“Timekettle’s Multilingual Translation Hardware: Allowing Simultaneous Translation for $699”

Personal translation devices have had a hugely transformative decade. It’s easy to imagine a time in the not-so-distance future when real-time, in-person smartphone translation is a ubiquitous commodity. For in-person meetings, two devices are touched together to initiate conversation translation. Remote users dial into the phone number associated with the product to access its translation capabilities. The Timekettle X1 is available online starting today, priced at $699.

Withings introduces cutting-edge multiscope technology for efficient vitals monitoring during telehealth consultations

Aside from a brief on-again-off-again thing with Nokia, Withings has been quietly establishing itself as a home health powerhouse in recent years. The “multiscope,” as the company has deemed it, is designed to give patients easy access to vitals during teleconference health calls. It’s kind of a supercharged digital thermometer that also serves as an electrocardiogram, oximeter and stethoscope, giving your healthcare provider more insight into what’s going on with you in real time. “While convenient and cost-effective, remote visits lacked the ability for health professionals to carry out the routine checks they perform in person. That audio can also be sent to the healthcare provider via an app.

Aurora and Continental clear first big obstacle in agreement for self-driving trucks in commercial market

Aurora Conti
Aurora and automotive supplier Continental have wrapped up the first phase of a more than $300 million project to mass produce autonomous vehicle hardware for commercial self-driving trucks. The two companies said Friday that the design and system architecture of an autonomous vehicle hardware kit is now complete. Importantly, the hardware system has to be reliable, easy to maintain and produced cheaply. Initially, these driverless trucks will carry freight between Dallas and Houston, a route the company has been using for testing. While these first 19 driverless trucks won’t be equipped with the Aurora-Continental hardware kit, they are designed to automotive standards and to operate safely without a driver, according to Aurora spokesperson Rachel Chibidakis.

Nuro, a cutting-edge autonomous delivery startup, partners with Foretellix simulation company to optimize R&D expenses.

Hero Image 1 Nuro
Autonomous delivery startup Nuro has struck a deal with safety-focused software company Foretellix to help with virtual testing of its automated driving system, in a bid to cut R&D costs while still pushing the technology forward. The partnership, which the companies are set to announce later Thursday, comes in the wake of a tumultuous stretch for Nuro. Many companies developing automated vehicles have their own simulation software; Foretellix specializes in generating millions of scenarios to test autonomous software, lowering the burden on the in-house teams. Foretellix’s software is able to “automatically analyze” driving logs from Nuro test vehicles and re-run those drives in simulation many times over. This allows Nuro’s automated system to encounter many different versions of a drive without the hardship – and most importantly, time – required to run all those variations in the real world.

High-Speed Rail Prevails as Hyperloop Falters

Brightline West Branded Train 5
The idea “originated out of his hatred for California’s proposed high-speed rail system,” according to his biographer Ashlee Vance. And the news of its demise broke less than two weeks after the Biden administration announced $6 billion in funding for high-speed rail projects across California. It’s a big win for public transit advocates, many of whom have spent decades stumping for not just high-speed rail, but better rail service overall. Thankfully this country was already building momentum back up for investing in its rail system, with a focus on faster trains. Brightline is also building what it calls “the nation’s first true high-speed rail network” between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Industrial Painting: PaintJet’s Giant Robots Revolutionizing Industrial Jobs

Bravo Close Up Horizontal
Here in the States, the $2 trillion industry employs around eight million people — that’s nearly one New York City. Even in financial boom times, however, these jobs can be difficult to keep filled, owing to physical demands and other potential dangers. As evidenced from videos released by PaintJet, those sorts of older technologies remain intact here — albeit with an automated twist. CEO Nick Hegeman tells TechCrunch, that in spit of looking like a fairly standard piece of heavy machine, “We have created 100% of the robotic system. Of course, PaintJet is far from the only company vying to introduce robots to the world of industrial painting.

Database management giant MongoDB says it’s investigating a security incident that has resulted in the exposure of some information about customers. In an update published on Sunday, MongoDB said does not believe hackers accessed any customer data stored in MongoDB Atlas, the company’s hosted database offering. For one customer, this included system logs, MongoDB said. System logs can include information about the running of a database or its underlying system. MongoDB declined to say how many customers may be affected by the compromise of its corporate systems.
