USA and European Union Pledge to Strengthen AI Safety and Risk Investigation Efforts

The main development out of the sixth TTC meeting appears to be a commitment from EU and US AI oversight bodies, the European AI Office and the US AI Safety Institute, to set up what’s couched as “a Dialogue”. The aim is fostering a deeper collaboration between the AI institutions, with a particular focus on encouraging the sharing of scientific information among respective AI research ecosystems. “Working groups jointly staffed by United States science agencies and European Commission departments and agencies have achieved substantial progress by defining critical milestones for deliverables in the areas of extreme weather, energy, emergency response, and reconstruction. We are also making constructive progress in health and agriculture.”In addition, an overview document on the collaboration around AI for the public good was published Friday. The joint statement refers to 2024 as “a Pivotal Year for Democratic Resilience”, on account of the number of elections being held around the world.

“New Alliance of Major Tech Firms Addresses Concerns over AI Job Displacement”

IBM has pledged to skill 2 million people in AI by 2030; Intel has said it’ll upskill over 30 million with AI in the same timeframe. Yet it’s not clear how many AI roles will be available then. According to a recent analysis by Lightcast, a labor market analytics firm, the demand for AI roles is decreasing, not increasing. “Consortium members commit to developing worker pathways particularly in job sectors that will increasingly integrate artificial intelligence technology,” the spokesperson said. Big Tech has big promises to keep, particularly where it concerns the future of work and the tech industry’s role in shaping it.

Can India Tackle Election Misinformation? Analyzing Labels and the AI Safety Coalition within its Borders

Content Authenticity Initiative
India, grappling with election misinfo, weighs up labels and its own AI safety coalition An Adobe-backed association wants to help organizations in the country with an AI standardIndia, long in the tooth when it comes to co-opting tech to persuade the public, has become a global hotspot when it comes to how AI is being used, and abused, in political discourse, and specifically the democratic process. Tech companies, who built the tools in the first place, are making trips to the country to push solutions. Using its open standard, the C2PA has developed a digital nutrition label for content called Content Credentials. It also automatically attaches to AI content generated by Adobe’s AI model Firefly. “That’s a little ‘CR’… it’s two western letters like most Adobe tools, but this indicates there’s more context to be shown,” he said.

“Pigment’s Unprecedented Success: Record-Breaking $145M Funding for Innovative Business Planning Startup in France’s Tech Industry”

Pigment Eleonore Crespo And Romain Niccoli Cropped
Paris-based startup Pigment has raised a $145 million funding round just five years after its inception. This funding round comes as a bit of a surprise as large rounds have been few and far between in France. Before Pigment, Crespo worked for VC firm Index Ventures and Google. We’ve developed a lot of modules that enable us to serve HR teams, supply chain teams and sales teams,” Crespo said. Like many software companies, Pigment has also added AI features.

“Fueling Optimism: Unveiling the Past and Potential of Tomorrow in ‘A Brief History of the Future'”

Brief History Poster
Cynicism is a quality taken almost for granted in tech journalism, and certainly we are as guilty as the next publication. “A Brief History of the Future,” hosted by Ari Wallach, also has the compelling quality of, as a PBS production, being completely free. But now we’re at a point that if we continually do that, we’re going to we’re going to lose the thread. And everyone seems to be relieved to be able to talk about the promise of the future rather than the threat of it. In case you’re wondering what moneyed special interest is trying to placate you with this beneficent presentation of a kindlier, wiser future… don’t worry, I asked.

Title: Implications of Rubrik’s IPO for Revitalizing Tech Companies through Public Markets

Rubrik, a data cybersecurity company that raised more than a half-billion dollars while private, filed to go public after the bell on Monday. As a private-market company, Rubrik last raised a lettered round in 2019 when it closed $261 million at a $3.6 billion post-money valuation, according to Crunchbase data. However, subscription revenue grew 40% over the same period, rising from $385.3 million to $537.9 million. The growth in its subscription revenue, and not its legacy revenues, is the engine that could propel Rubrik to a successful IPO. A Silicon Valley storyRubrik’s potential IPO could prove a coup for Lightspeed Venture Partners, a well-known Silicon Valley venture capital shop.

“Against Irresponsible AI: An Open Letter by Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish, Katy Perry and More Musically-Inclined Artists”

Nicki Minaj
A group of 200 musicians signed an open letter calling on tech companies and developers to not undermine human creativity with AI music generation tools. “When used irresponsibly, AI poses enormous threats to our ability to protect our privacy, our identities, our music and our livelihoods,” the letter reads. Some companies like Adobe and Stability AI are working on AI music generators that use licensed or royalty-free music. But these tech companies aren’t listening. “This assault on human creativity must be stopped,” the musicians’ letter says.

Police Tapping Tech Companies: The Secretive Tactics of ‘Reverse’ Data Searches

Geofence Warrants
With the aim of identifying criminal suspects, U.S. police departments are increasingly relying on a controversial surveillance practice to demand large amounts of users’ data from tech companies. So-called “reverse” searches allow law enforcement and federal agencies to force big tech companies, like Google, to turn over information from their vast stores of user data. Reverse searches effectively cast a digital dragnet over a tech company’s store of user data to catch the information that police are looking for. Microsoft, Snap, Uber and Yahoo (which owns TechCrunch) have all received reverse orders for user data. Some companies choose not to store user data and others scramble the data so it can’t be accessed by anyone other than the user.
