“Compensating Creators: Exploring the Payment of Training Data by OpenAI’s Vice President”

Should artists whose work was used to train generative AI like ChatGPT be compensated for their contributions? OpenAI is in a delicate legal position where it concerns the ways in which it uses data to train generative AI systems like the art-creating tool DALL-E 3, which is incorporated into ChatGPT. “Training AI models using publicly available internet materials is fair use, as supported by long-standing and widely accepted precedents,” writes the company in a January blog post. OpenAI has licensing agreements in place with some content providers, like Shutterstock, and allows webmasters to block its web crawler from scraping their site for training data. In addition, like some of its rivals, OpenAI lets artists “opt out” of and remove their work from the data sets that the company uses to train its image-generating models.

The London-based phone company’s media push largely relies on trickling out information about devices bit by bit. Nothing Phone (2a) certainly fits the bill. While it’s actually the company’s third handset, it’s the aimed squarely at a different demographic than the flagship Phone (1) and Phone (2). After various teases and a handful of official image releases, the Phone (2a) finally saw the light of day (well, the warm glow of a Barcelona night) at MWC 2024. Phone (2a) keeps the Phone (2)’s dual-camera set up, though it’s been moved to the center.

Flexport May Be Forcing Job Cuts Once More

Flexport, a logistics company with $2.7 billion in venture and debt funding, is reportedly planning additional layoffs. Flexport, which provides freight forwarding and brokerage services, announced similar cuts in October, when founder Ryan Petersen returned as CEO and slashed the company’s workforce by 20% — affecting about 600 workers. An additional round of layoffs at Flexport would cap a brutal January for tech workers, as giants and startups alike have eliminated a combined tens of thousands of jobs across the industry. While San Francisco-based Flexport wouldn’t be an outlier for making cuts, the timing would be peculiar. Just last week, Flexport said it’d raised an additional $260 million in funding from Shopify.

“Can the newest near-room-temperature superconductor be trusted? Proceed with caution.”

If you’re someone who loves an internet hype cycle, good news: There’s a new group of scientists who claim to have discovered a near-room-temperature superconductor. (It should be noted that most of these people do not appear to be scientists let alone condensed-matter physicists.) The one that grabbed the most headlines — LK-99 — dominated the internet for a few weeks over the summer before succumbing to the scientific method. Another one, detailed in a paper co-authored by Ranga Dias and others, made a splash in March only to be subject to a retraction in September. This new material picks up where LK-99 left off, which isn’t really an auspicious starting point.
