New York Times Unveils Enhanced App for Improved Discovery and Streamlined Navigation

The NYT Games app is debuting a new redesign to help users discover games and track their progress more easily. The redesign comes nearly a year after the New York Times renamed its games-focused app from “NYT Crosswords” to “NYT Games” to better represent its growing family of games. NYT Games principal product designer Lian Chang told TechCrunch that the redesign caters to both old and new players. Chang says the redesigned game cards incentivize players to come back to a game and finish it. The idea behind the redesigned game cards was to not only be inviting for discovery purposes, but also be functional.

The New York Times Games app has undergone a complete overhaul with a revamped design that aims to enhance user experience and accessibility. After rebranding from “NYT Crosswords” to “NYT Games,” the app is now taking the next step in its evolution by introducing a sleek new look featuring game card designs and improved navigation.

According to Jennifer Scheerer, the product design director for NYT Games, the inspiration behind the redesign was to transform the app into a comprehensive hub for all types of games. As the company continued to expand its offerings, it became clear that the initial app design, which solely catered to crosswords, was no longer suitable.

The updated design strives to portray a more modern and inviting feel for users. Lian Chang, the principal product designer, explains that the redesign was created with both seasoned players and new users in mind. “We wanted to showcase the variety of games available, and we incorporated vibrant colors and brand icons to achieve this. We also simplified the typography to cater to first-time users. For regular players, we aimed for a more streamlined and functional design.” The game cards, in particular, were modified to not only facilitate discovery but also to incentivize players to return and complete their games.

The app’s navigation system has also been revamped, now featuring all games, archives, and packs in one place. This change makes it easier for users to access their preferred games quickly. As Scheerer explains, “Previously, the main focus was on crosswords, but now we want to showcase all our games openly. This update allows us to seamlessly add new games and features as we go.”

The previous app had five tabs at the bottom, but the new design brings it down to three. Chang shares that the team experimented with various tab configurations before settling on the most optimal display. The final decision includes tabs for “Games,” “Stats,” and “Leaderboard” to declutter the homepage.

The upgraded version also includes personalized greetings that appear throughout the day, helping to create a welcoming and friendly tone for players. These greetings are tailored to users, taking into account factors such as the time of day and when they last played a game.

When asked about the future, both Chang and Scheerer emphasize the importance of gathering and incorporating feedback from users for the continued growth of the app’s gaming hub. They view this redesign as just the start of the Games team’s ongoing efforts and goals.
