Texas Residents Blocked from Accessing Pornhub Without VPN
The residents of Texas have been dealt a blow with the news that they can no longer access the popular porn site, Pornhub, without the assistance of a VPN. Aylo, formerly known as MindGeek, has implemented this change in response to the state’s implementation of age verification laws.
The move is not surprising as similar laws have already been passed in states like Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, Utah, Montana, and North Carolina. Texas was the only state where the law was temporarily halted due to a challenge by the porn industry and its supporters. However, the recent ruling by the US Court of Appeals has given the state the green light to enforce this law.
“We have always been in favor of protecting minors from accessing adult content, but we believe that age verification is not the solution. It can compromise data security and anonymity,” stated the Electronic Frontier Foundation and R Street, two organizations that have been vocal in their opposition to these laws.
As a result, Pornhub has taken the drastic measure of blocking access to its site rather than implementing age verification measures which it believes are “haphazard and dangerous.” This is a major shift in their stance as they previously complied with Louisiana’s laws by using the state-run app, LA Wallet, which requires users to verify their ID in order to access the site.
However, as these laws spread to other states, Pornhub and its sister sites have taken a different approach. In states where age verification is required, a video by porn star Cherie DeVille greets users, explaining the site’s stance on data privacy concerns.
- Adult actors who live in these states can still access Pornhub through their creator accounts as they have already verified their identity during the account creation process.
These recent changes in state internet regulations come at a time when the issue of online platform access is being debated in Congress. Bills such as the Kids Online Safety Act have gained momentum after tech CEOs were questioned about children’s internet safety. However, concerns have been raised about the potential for these safety initiatives to be misused by wrongdoers.
In addition to these developments, the House of Representatives recently passed a bill that could result in the banning of TikTok and other “foreign adversary controlled applications.” This bill is now up for debate in the Senate and could have far-reaching implications for government interference in the tech industry.
