Orchard Robotics is a prime example of how data is driving the agricultural revolution. By cutting out the middleman, this innovative company is making automated farming more accessible and efficient. They have developed a sensing module that can be easily integrated into existing farm equipment, such as tractors and other vehicles.
While many farmers recognize the potential benefits of technology in increasing yield and filling labor shortages, the high cost of fully automated systems can be a deterrent. But with Orchard Robotics’ user-friendly solution, the barrier of entry is significantly lowered.
The company initially focused on apple crops, hence the name Orchard. Their system utilizes cameras that can capture up to 100 images per second, providing precise data on every tree it passes. The Orchard OS software then utilizes artificial intelligence to build detailed maps based on this data. This includes information on the distribution of buds and fruit on each tree, as well as the color of the apples.
“Our cameras image trees from bud to bloom to harvest, and use advanced computer vision and machine learning models we’ve developed to collect precise data about hundreds of millions of fruit,” says founder and CEO Charlie Wu.
According to Wu, this is a significant improvement over traditional methods, which often rely on manually collected samples of only 100 fruits. With Orchard Robotics, farmers can get a comprehensive overview of their crops’ health and success rate, down to the location and size of each tree with a margin of only a couple of inches.
The company was founded at Cornell University in 2022 and has already begun field testing with farmers. The results have been so successful that they have garnered interest from investors. This week, Orchard Robotics announced a seed round of $3.2 million, led by General Catalyst. Other participants included Humba Ventures, Soma Capital, Correlation Ventures, VU Ventures Partners, and Genius Ventures. This funding will be used to expand the team, invest in research and development, and accelerate the company’s go-to-market efforts.
