Tesla has announced a recall of all 3,878 Cybertrucks that have been shipped to date, citing a potential safety hazard with the accelerator pedal. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the pedal has the potential to get stuck, putting drivers at risk of a crash.
This recall comes after a tumultuous week for Tesla, with the company laying off over 10% of its workforce and losing two top executives. In addition, shareholders were asked to re-vote on CEO Elon Musk’s controversial compensation package, which was previously rejected by a judge.
Reports of issues with the Cybertruck’s accelerator pedal began to surface in recent weeks, leading to a pause in deliveries while the problem was addressed. Musk stated on X that the company was taking a cautious approach and no crashes or injuries related to the issue have been reported to NHTSA.
After receiving reports of accelerator pedal incidents from customers on March 31 and April 3, Tesla conducted tests and determined that an unapproved change had been made in the assembly of the pedal, which introduced lubricant and reduced its retention to the pedal. As a result, a recall was issued on April 12.
For existing Cybertrucks, Tesla will either replace or rework the accelerator pedal. The company has also begun building new Cybertrucks with a modified pedal and is addressing any vehicles that are in transit or at delivery centers.
While the Cybertruck has only been shipping since late last year, this is not its first recall. However, the previous one was minor and focused on a software issue with the font sizes of warning lights on all Tesla vehicles. The Cybertruck was originally unveiled back in 2019.
