Apple to Introduce ChatGPT, an AI-Powered Chatbot Experience, to Siri and First-Party Apps
This morning, during its annual WorldWide Developer Conference in Cupertino, Apple announced that it will be integrating ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, into its first-party apps and features across its operating systems. This move is expected to enhance user experience and provide a new level of convenience and accessibility.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Apple in a new way to make ChatGPT accessible to their users,” stated OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a press release. “Apple’s values of prioritizing safety and innovation align with our mission to bring advanced AI technology to everyone.”
With the upcoming integration, Siri will have the ability to utilize ChatGPT’s knowledge and “expertise” in situations where it can offer helpful solutions. For example, you can ask Siri for meal suggestions using ingredients from your garden when hosting friends, and Siri will use ChatGPT to provide a personalized answer with your permission.
You can even include photos with your questions to ChatGPT through Siri or ask for assistance with your documents or PDFs. Additionally, Writing Tools, a system-wide writing feature, will now offer ChatGPT as an option for creating content, including images. You can also gather initial ideas and send them to ChatGPT to generate alternative versions or revisions.
The integration of ChatGPT into Siri and other first-party apps will be available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and MacOS Sequoia later this year, and will not require a separate ChatGPT or OpenAI account. The AI model powering these integrations will be GPT-4o, OpenAI’s recently released flagship generative AI model.
Users with a subscription to one of OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT plans will have access to additional features within Siri and other Apple apps with ChatGPT integration. Apple has emphasized that privacy is a top priority in these integrations, reassuring users that requests will not be stored by OpenAI and that their IP addresses will be obscured.
