Today marked the start of Apple’s highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024). The event, which kicked off with the customary keynote at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT, focused on the company’s impressive software offerings and the talented developers behind them. Attendees were treated to a sneak peek at the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS and watchOS. But the biggest news of all came with the announcement of Apple Intelligence, the company’s bold entry into the competitive AI market.
To catch up on all the exciting news and unveilings, you can check out the archived presentation on Apple’s official events page. Alternatively, you can watch the YouTube replay down below. And for those curious about the pre-event buzz and predictions, everything is neatly captured below the YouTube embed. Otherwise, you can head straight to our comprehensive breakdown of all the exciting announcements made at this year’s WWDC.
“Over the past couple of years, critics have pointed out that Apple has been lagging behind the likes of Google, Microsoft and OpenAI in terms of generative AI research. Our own Ivan Mehta has emphasized the importance of creating AI products that are actually useful, rather than just flashy demos on stage. CEO Tim Cook has been promising to address concerns surrounding AI for a while now, and what better time and place to do so than at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino during WWDC.”
Recent rumors have sparked speculation about a potential collaboration between Apple and GPT-developer OpenAI, with the aim of leveling the AI playing field. The latest reports have even revealed the name of Apple’s AI initiative: Apple Intelligence. However, not all of Apple’s recent devices will be compatible with the new system. And there’s plenty of talk surrounding potential AI enhancements for iOS 18, as well as a much-needed revamp for Siri.
While new hardware is not always guaranteed at a software-focused event like WWDC, Apple has made it a habit in recent years. This includes Apple Silicon updates and last year’s highly anticipated Vision Pro debut.
However, recent rumors suggest that this may be an off-year for hardware announcements, despite the pressure after a lukewarm reception of Apple’s first foray into mixed reality and the cancellation of its electric car project.
Despite the major focus on iOS 18, Apple will also be unveiling the highly anticipated macOS 15, which is rumored to include some major design changes – including a new look for the ever-useful Calculator app on the iPhone. And it’s safe to bet that many of the exciting AI features on iOS 18 will also make their way to macOS 15.
As always, TechCrunch will be right there on the ground at Apple Park, bringing you all the latest news and updates as they happen.
