Pressure Mounts for EU Legislators to Fully Disclose Ties with Child Safety Technology Company, Thorn

Last year the Commission released some documents relating to its exchanges with the company in question but denied access to others. But EU legislation is a three way affair — requiring buy in from the Commission and Council, too. Here’s the statement, attributed to European Commission spokesperson for Home Affairs, Anitta Hipper:The Commission will provide access to documents as appropriate and within our legal framework. Specifically, as regards the Ombudsman recommendation, the Commission will carefully consider the recommendation of the Ombudsman. We reached out to Thorn but it did not respond to a request for comment about the ombudsman’s inquiry.

Artemis Moon Missions Postponed by NASA to Allow SpaceX and Other Companies Additional Time for Technological Advancements

Hls Eva Apr2020
NASA is pushing back the next two Artemis missions to the moon — including the first crewed lunar mission in over fifty years — by around twelve months in order to give commercial partners more time to develop their technology. The date of the fourth Artemis mission remains unchanged on September 2028. That’s because SpaceX must also develop in-orbit refueling capabilities, as the architecture involves Starship refueling in space before picking up the astronauts. After delivering astronauts to the moon, the Starship HLS must then launch from the surface before docking with Orion. NASA officials also outlined a handful of issues they discovered after the demonstration launch of SLS in late 2022.

“Tack One Unveils Enhanced Location Tracking System for Children and Seniors”

Tack In Hand1
Today, the company unveiled its new generation of GPS device, Tack GPS Plus, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024. The company claims Tack GPS Plus reduces search time in high-rise cities by offering vertical distance and geographical coordinates. The Tack GPS Plus can be widely used by parents, caregivers, pet owners, and more. Tack GPS Plus follows the company’s second product, a palm-sized autonomous flood-detection device called Tack EVO FloodFinder. Tack GPS Plus is now available on the company’s official website and will then be sold on Amazon, Lazada, and Shopee around mid-January.

“Experience the Game through Touch: OneCourt’s Revolutionary Haptic Mini-Field for Blind Fans”

Onecourt
Sports fans most often take in their favorite game by watching it on TV or from the venue itself, but those with blind and low vision generally must rely on the announcer or a radio broadcast. OneCourt aims to augment their experience with a lap-top miniature field that lets someone feel the position of the players and ball in near real time. There’s nothing wrong with the radio broadcast, but it’s often delayed by 10 to 30 seconds, and neither it nor live announcers provide the spatial detail that sighted fans are treated to. Fortunately, many major league sports broadcast the exact, real-time locations of the players and ball along with video and audio. The OneCourt team takes this information and transmits it to a haptic display with a touchable cover imitating the pitch or field lines.

Will a striking design differentiate rabbit’s r1 pocket AI from a multitude of virtual assistants?

Rabbit R1 Top
In a sea of AI-enabled gadgets at CES, the rabbit r1 (all lowercase, they insist) stands out not just for its high-vis paint job and unique form factor, but because of its dedication to the bit. “The phone is an entertainment device, but if you’re trying to get something done it’s not the highest efficiency machine. After all, that’s what our so-called “AI assistants” have supposedly been doing for the last five or six years. Even so, even if the rabbit r1 is better or cuter, people prefer simplicity and convenience. Why would they pay money to carry a second device when their first one does most of those tasks?

Amazon Introduces Matter Casting to its Smart Displays and TVs

Echo Show 15 Disney
But the company will be the first to support Matter Casting, the video- and audio-beaming feature of the Matter smart home standard, on its smart displays and smart TVs, Amazon announced this morning at CES 2024. Once Matter casting comes to Amazon’s Prime Video app for Android and iOS, users will be able to cast content to supported Amazon devices — starting with the Echo Show 15 — by tapping the new dedicated Matter Casting button. Beyond the Echo Show 15, Amazon says that Matter Casting support will arrive on Fire TVs including smart TVs from Panasonic with Fire TV built in, and — on the app side — Plex, Pluto TV, Sling TV, Starz and ZDF later this year. Tellingly, Google announced this week that its casting tech, Chromecast, will be built into all of LG’s new TVs — but gave no mention of Matter Casting. The Matter Casting spec — which was developed with major input from Amazon — can accomplish more than casting, in theory.

The Future of Gaming: A Startup’s Bold Belief in Embracing the Bane Look

We previewed Skyted’s voice-capturing mask last week, but when I came across the startup at CES 2024, I had to check it out for myself in person. You can read all about the tech in our previous article, but what is it actually like in person? “We launched a mobile application that will give you information about how big your ‘sound bubble’ is. The team has some ideas:“We’re looking at various customer segments; mostly businesses, open spaces, like offices where this would be a huge. We also looking at B2C, for use cases such as gaming,” explains Daridon.

Using Full-Home Radar: Serenity’s Method for Detecting Falls in Autumn

20170215 Dsc00236
Serenity, the result of a fruitful partnership with Alarm.com, is an innovative fall-detection system that does away with traditional wearables. What sets Serenity apart is its ability to construct a 13-point skeleton model of individuals in near-real-time, using radar data processed by AI on the device. This model helps distinguish between intentional lying down and falls, including slow falls that traditional accelerometers fail to detect. from a distance, without any wearable device – a feature that has far-reaching implications for home healthcare. “Serenity isn’t just a product; it’s a promise of independence, safety, and peace of mind for our aging population.”

Employee performance reviews take time and effort — and aren’t always conducted very efficiently. Seeking to make the performance review process easier — or at least less of a headache than it has been historically — Ben Hastings and Jon Malpass founded PerformYard, a platform that provides a collection of software-based retention, staff management and upskilling tools. “PerformYard has been cash-flow positive with attractive unit economics for the majority of our existence as a business.”Prior to launching PerformYard, Hastings spent the majority of his career in tech as a go-to-market sales leader. “In early 2013, I decided to go all-in on building a software-as-a-service platform for employee performance management and personally funded the initial team. “Our mission is to simply enable and facilitate any performance process that our customers are looking to automate and improve,” Hastings said.

Does EU Compliance Require Microsoft to Disclose OpenAI Investment as a Merger?

The European Union is checking whether Microsoft’s investment in generative AI giant OpenAI is reviewable under the bloc’s merger regulations, it said today. “Finally, the European Commission is checking whether Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI might be reviewable under the EU Merger Regulation,” it added. Commenting in a statement, EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager said:Virtual worlds and generative AI are rapidly developing. They also told us there are no “particular concerns” the EU has identified yet vis-a-vis competition and generative AI as yet. Per the spokesperson, a transaction would be notifiable to the Commission under the EU Merger Regulation if it involves ” a change of control on a lasting basis”.
