Apple condemns DOJ’s “misguided” iPhone to Android transformation effort

Appleevent.sep14keynote.tim Cook.01
Apple is dubbing the litigation misguided and warning the DOJ risks trashing all the things its customers value about its integrated mobile ecosystem. In an on-the-record statement provided to TechCrunch, Apple said:This lawsuit threatens who we are and the principles that set Apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets. The suit claims Apple holds a more than 70% share of “performance smartphones” and over 65% of the US smartphone market, respectively. But they are also aggressively briefing that the DOJ case will fail. In today’s briefing Apple also claimed the DOJ’s case has changed tack multiple times (it suggests at least six) over the four years it’s been in formulation.

“Streamlined Transition: Apple to Simplify Integration with Android Devices by Fall 2025”

Apple says it plans to make it easier for customers to switch to Android as a result of the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which went into force today. This solution is not yet available, but Apple is committing to having it ready by fall 2025, the company says. On this front, Apple’s Data & Privacy website is being updated to allow users to export their App Store data to authorized third parties, the document says. Today, would-be Android users can use Google’s “Switch to Android” iOS app to migrate important content, like contacts, calendars, photos, videos, messages, and more to a new Android device. It’s unclear if Apple’s new solution will address these areas as Apple hasn’t yet said what, specifically, it aims to improve.

Windows 11 to Drop Official Support for Android Applications

Moshed Windows 11
It was only a few years ago — in 2021 — that Windows 11 gained official support for Android apps thanks to a Microsoft-maintained VM called the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). With the WSA, Windows 11 users could install and run nearly the full range of apps for Android, optionally through Amazon’s Android marketplace — the Amazon Appstore — thanks to an Amazon-Microsoft deal. Now, Windows 11 is losing official Android app support — and access to the Amazon Appstore along with it. Windows 11 users who’ve installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps will continue to have access to those apps through March 5, 2025 — but not after. Now, just because Microsoft’s ending support for the WSA doesn’t mean it’ll become impossible to run Android apps on Windows.

Brave Browser
Brave is launching its AI-powered assistant, Leo, to all Android users. The assistant allows users to ask questions, translate pages, summarize pages, create content and more. With Leo, Brave is hoping its users won’t have to turn to ChatGPT or other popular LLMs for tasks and queries, and will instead use its service instead. If you’re not seeing Brave Leo for Android yet, that’s because it will be rolled out in phases over the next few days. Brave isn’t the only browser company to recently launch an AI assistant, as Opera launched an AI assistant called Aria last year.

“Enhance Your Mastodon Experience: Share Your Profile on Android with QR Code”

Qr Code Mastodon
Decentralized social network Mastodon has updated its official app for Android to let users easily share their profiles with QR Codes. To share the QR code, users can go to their profile tab and tap the QR icon next to their name to get a code related to the profile others can scan. Mastodon has also updated prompts for blocking and muting to explain the effects of taking those actions on a profile. Users trying out Mastodon have complained about the complicated nature of having different servers on the ActivityPub network. The company will have to work on making it easier for users to understand and navigate the decentralized social world.

Annoying Issue: Android Users Unable to Identify Songs with Gemini

Google Bard Gemini V1
On Android, Gemini also breaks Google Assistant’s song recognition. So imagine my frustration when I discovered that Gemini on Android can’t recognize songs — or even perform the basic task of funneling song ID requests to Google Assistant. Or, were I using a conventional home screen, I could place the dedicated song ID shortcut. Perhaps it’s sophisticated in other ways — ways I haven’t discovered yet, frankly. Full transparency, I’ve reached out to Google about song recognition via Gemini and I’ll update this post if I hear back.

WhatsApp announced today that it is rolling out a “search by date” function for individual and group chats on Android devices. To search by date, they have to tap on the search button and then tap the calendar icon. Users can already search through conversations by media type such as links, media, and docs through the conversation detail page.
