Apple launches online distribution option for EU-targeted iOS developers

Apple App Store
Apple is opening up web distribution for iOS apps targeting users in the European Union from today. Apple’s walled garden stance has enabled it to funnel essentially all iOS developer revenue through its own App Store in the past. An Apple rep described this as a baseline safety and security standard which they said iOS users expect to help ensure their device is protected from external risks. Given Apple has only just started implementing web distribution for iOS apps it remains to be seen whether the EU will step in for a closer look at this aspect of its DMA compliance too. It’s also unclear how much demand there will be among iOS developers for direct web distribution.

“Enhance Your Shopping Experience: eBay Unveils ‘Shop the Look’ Feature on iOS Powered by AI”

Shop The Look Wide 1
EBay on Tuesday launched a new generative AI-powered feature to appeal to fashion enthusiasts: a “shop the look” section within its iOS mobile app that will suggest a carousel of images and ideas, based on the customer’s shopping history. The idea is to introduce how other fashion items may complement their current wardrobe. “Shop the look” will appear to any eBay shopper who has viewed at least 10 fashion items over the past 180 days, the company notes. Google last summer introduced a way for consumers to virtually try on clothes using a new AI shopping feature, for example. “Shop the look” will initially be available on iOS in the U.S. and U.K., with support for Android coming later this year.

New AI Assistant from Brave Coming to iPhone and iPad

Brave Browser
Brave announced on Wednesday that it’s bringing its AI assistant, called Leo, to iPhone and iPad users. The iOS launch of Leo brings voice-to-text capability, which isn’t available in the Android version of the AI assistant. By giving access to a built-in AI assistant, Brave is hoping users won’t turn to ChatGPT or other similar services. Brave isn’t the only browser company to launch an AI assistant; Opera launched an AI assistant called Aria last year. To access Leo, open the browser, start typing in the address bar and then select “Ask Leo.” Leo is an opt-in feature and can be disabled via the app’s settings.

Apple Adjusts DMA, Opens New Doors for iOS Web Distribution of Apps

Apple will allow iOS developers located in the European Union to distribute apps from the web, rather then via its App Store. “Web Distribution, available in a software update later this spring, will let authorized developers distribute their iOS apps to EU users directly from a website the developer owns and operates,” it writes. iOS users will also need to approve the developer installing apps from their site via their iPhone Settings. Apple’s initial proposal for DMA compliance did not allow web based distribution for apps. While its current attempt to force EU users to consent to tracking is being challenged via GDPR and consumer protection complaints.

iOS users in Europe rejoice as Fortnite makes its long-awaited return (for real this time)

After terminating Epic Games’ developer account on Wednesday, Apple said it will reinstate the Fortnite maker’s access to publish iOS apps in Europe. This means that Epic can move forward with its plans for an Epic Games Store, and it can bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe. Last month, Epic announced it would be able to bring Fortnite and the Epic Games Store back because of Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). “We are moving forward as planned to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe. But under the new DMA law, third-party marketplaces like the Epic Games Store can come to iOS, lessening Apple’s control over apps in Europe.
