On Tuesday, eBay launched a new feature within its iOS mobile app that uses generative AI to cater to fashion lovers. This “shop the look” section suggests personalized ideas and images based on a user’s shopping history, with the options evolving as the customer continues to shop.
The concept behind this feature is to introduce shoppers to complementary fashion items that would complement their current wardrobe. To achieve this, the “shop the look” section includes interactive hotspots that reveal similar items and outfit inspirations with a mix of pre-owned and luxury pieces, tailored to the user’s personal style. The feature was developed in collaboration with eBay’s Responsible AI team and RAI Principles, powered by eBay.ai.
This new addition will be accessible to any eBay user who has browsed through at least 10 fashion items within the past 180 days. It can be found on the eBay homepage and fashion landing page.
For eBay, this feature presents a new way to showcase its expansive inventory and potentially encourage more sales. The company plans to explore expanding this to other categories and adding more personalization elements throughout the year.
However, eBay is not the only platform using AI to enhance the fashion shopping experience. Last summer, Google introduced a virtual try-on feature using AI. Similarly, Amazon has incorporated AI to help customers find the right size and fit when shopping online. In contrast, eBay’s “shop the look” feature focuses on fashion inspiration and finding the right style, which can be subjective.
“Shop the look” initially launched on iOS in the U.S. and U.K., with plans to introduce it on Android later this year. To experience the benefits of AI and this new feature, head to the eBay app and give it a try.
