0G Labs, a web3 infrastructure firm,” has raised $35 million in a pre-seed round, the team exclusively told TechCrunch. “In order to build the basic technology, we wanted to raise $5 million, originally,” said 0G co-founder Michael Heinrich. 0G, sometimes called ZeroGravity, is creating a modular AI blockchain that aims to alleviate the pain points of on-chain AI applications in the web3 ecosystem, like speed and cost efficiency. On-chain AI and gaming requires a fast data pipeline. It also plans to enable new use cases and things that were not possible before like on-chain AI, on-chain gaming and high-frequency decentralized finance (DeFi).

“Game-Changing Kilns: Furno’s Bet on Revolutionizing the Cement Industry”

Furno Kiln Prototype
The goal was straightforward but ambitious: upend the cement industry. Furno’s smaller kilns fly in the face of trends in the cement industry today, which has been chasing ever larger equipment. By building smaller kilns, Furno is hoping to lower capital expenditures through mass production and lower operating expenses through energy efficiency. And because Furno’s kilns are smaller, they could allow cement to be remade right on a construction site. Already, Furno has captured the attention of ready-mix concrete companies, which have to buy cement from vertically integrated companies.

Farm work is tough on the body and requires long hours in sometimes extreme environments. It can also be difficult to hire and retain staff in a category that frequently relies on migrant workers. We’ve seen a number of startups attempt to automate field work over the past decade. The company’s first system, Amiga, is modular, allowing it to be deployed for a broad range of tasks. In this study we saw the number of weekly labor hours reduced by 50% – 80%.

CES has increasingly become defined by what automakers and other mobility-focused companies bring to Las Vegas, and CES 2024 has been no exception. Hydrogen’s making a big comebackThe underlying technology for hydrogen-powered vehicles has been around for a while, though it’s been eclipsed by battery-powered electric vehicles. But at CES 2024, a number of companies from Nikola to Hyundai and Bosch were touting its benefits. We explore why this is the year several companies are highlighting hydrogen, with an additional deep dive into Hyundai’s plans. Kia’s modular EV lineup is revealedModular phones may have come and gone, but Kia hopes modular vehicles will have a bit more success.

Honda’s 0 series EVs, Saloon and Space-Hub concepts debutIf you’re tired of “thick, heavy” EVs, Honda has an alternative vision for you. The carmaker showcased a more sleek design for its Saloon concept, while the Space-Hub takes a more family-friendly van approach. Though like its standard form factor, the voice-powered ChatGPT could still be tricked, as we learned in a hands-on demo. Get a Sneak Peek at Kia’s Latest Electric Van Collection Unveiled at CES 2024

Kia Pv5
Kia is following up a strong year for its passenger EVs by sharing what it wants to do for businesses looking to go electric. The Korean automaker just unveiled at CES 2024 a forthcoming lineup of electric vans and other similar vehicles all set to be built on a new modular platform. What that looks like in practice, according to Kia, are vehicles with fixed driver cabs that can have the rest of the vehicle’s cabin swapped out. These cabins (Kia calls them “life modules”) connect to the chassis using both mechanical couplings and electromagnets, though Kia was light on the details about how that will work. The first model to be made will be the Kia PV5, a three-row van with futuristic styling.
