It’s something Apple is striving to answer with its own take on the category, Apple Intelligence, which was officially unveiled this week at WWDC 2024.
Apple Intelligence is a more bespoke approach to generative AI, built specifically with the company’s different operating systems at their foundation.
It’s a very Apple approach in the sense that it prioritizes a frictionless user experience above all.
The operating systems also feature a feedback mechanism into which users can report issues with the generative AI system.
This should function the same with all external models Apple partners with, including Google Gemini.
TikTok is working towards launching a new app called TikTok Notes that will allow users to post images in an apparent bid to rival Instagram, a service best known for its static-photo sharing feature.
Instagram, of course, has expanded into video and stories itself, taking pieces of other services and incorporating them into its own product.
As is nearly every social service you can imagine.
If it works for one social media service, expect the rest to follow in some manner at some point — probably sooner rather than later.
Expanding a feature set can bolster engaged time, and therefore how much revenue a social media service can earn.
Family location services company Life360 has launched a new notification for its apps to automatically alert friends and family when you reach a destination after taking a flight.
Life360 said that the feature uses phone sensors to measure location, altitude and speed to determine if you are taking a flight.
Plus, its algorithms can detect takeoff and landing times, and alert family members when you connect to the network post-landing.
The company said the landing notification feature is a useful alternative to online flight trackers or waiting for the traveler to send updates to their circle.
The company’s CEO Chris Hulls told TechCrunch that the company wants to focus on safety and protection updates for users’ inner circle.
When the open source streaming service, Apache Kafka, was created in 2011 at LinkedIn, it was a different world.
The way they do that is by taking advantage of today’s cloud environment to separate compute from storage using an object storage service like Amazon S3.
“When you interact and store data in cloud object storage you get to sidestep all these networking fees that plague these big data systems when they get lifted, shifted into the cloud,” he said.
“Based on our experience building the kind of storage system on top of object storage we had built at DataDog, we felt like streaming systems should work the same way.
The founders brought some of the folks who helped build Husky to build the new system, and today they have 9 employees.
Withings started previewing its cycle tracking feature in some markets in September 2023 when the ScanWatch 2 launched.
“The menstrual cycle tracking feature was one of the top feature requests of our community.
(Incidentally, it is possible to use temperature tracking as a proxy for cycle tracking, but you have to be very accurate with the measurement).
By integrating menstrual cycle tracking, Withings acknowledges the complex and nuanced nature of health — and adds more features to help track, measure and predict.
The market Withings is going after with its cycle tracking feature is absolutely mind-bogglingly large.
Google said on Friday it will start removing apps from its Play Store in India if developers fail to comply with its payment policy, taking a definitive stand weeks after the top Indian court granted the Android-maker with relief.
Without naming them, Google said 10 companies in India, including “many well-established ones,” have not paid Google Play’s fee despite being provided with three years to prepare.
“After giving these developers more than three years to prepare, including three weeks after the Supreme Court’s order, we are taking necessary steps to ensure our policies are applied consistently across the ecosystem, as we do for any form of policy violation globally,” the company wrote in a blog post.
“Enforcement of our policy, when necessary, can include removal of non-compliant apps from Google Play.”This is a developing story.
More to come.
Apparently Frank Slootman, the veteran tech executive, was popular with investors, at least judging from their reaction that he will be stepping down as CEO of Snowflake.
The company stock price has plunged over 24% in after hours trading on the news.
Slootman came on board in 2019, taking over for veteran executive Bob Muglia, and was charged with taking the company public the following year.
In fact, Fortune reported that the chief executive was making an eye popping $95 million a month at one point.
Prior to coming to Snowflake, he spent six years as chairman and CEO at ServiceNow.
“It’s the single best time to invest in [crypto] companies,” according to 10T Holdings and 1RoundTable Partners’ CEO, Dan Tapiero.
Crypto reporter Jacquelyn Melinek has the inside scoop on why his firm is taking the long view to ride out the volatility of the web3 landscape as it raises its fourth fund.

I’m interested in working in space technology and will be applying for jobs in that field while I’m on OPT.
I’ve heard that most space tech companies are reluctant to hire individuals on F-1 student visas due to export rules and other compliance issues.
It took Oura (pictured above) to show the world that the ring is a viable health tracking form factor.
The company concluded today’s Galaxy S24 Unpacked event by announcing the Samsung Galaxy Ring.
Meet the Galaxy Ring, with AI technology is empowering us to stay connected, unleash our creativity and build healthier habits all in more meaningful ways.
We know it’s called the Galaxy Ring.
Of course, while company, the form factor does have its feature limitations owing to a small size.
There are a ton of tools out there that help you keep eye contact when talking with people online – some (Plexicam, CenterCam) place the camera in front of your screen.
Others use AI to edit the video stream to make it look as if you’re looking at the camera (it’s creepy AF when done poorly).
EyeQ is taking a different approach, and we took a closer look at CES 2024 in Las Vegas.
The lack of personal connection and the inability to maintain eye contact during video calls are major contributing factors to this issue.
“Our primary focus is on the online healthcare and consultancy markets, where making authentic eye contact is crucial.
