Recommerce is a growing trend in the retail world that allows consumers to buy products and then resell them through online marketplaces or physical stores. This is a great way for smaller businesses to get more exposure, since they can sell products at a lower cost than traditional retailers. VCs are beginning to take notice of this trend and are starting to invest in companies that are able to make recommerce successful.
Investors are eager to enter the resale market, as this sector has seen growth in recent years. platforms like Etsy, Poshmark, The RealReal and thredUP have attracted investors, resulting in more companies entering the market. In 2017 alone, VCs flowed approximately $6 billion to these platforms.
VCs are increasingly interested in startups that can help them recommerce, especially those that can tap into large consumer markets. Some food for thought for founders building startups in this (re)emerging space is to consider how their product or service can help consumers save money, time, or hassle. Additionally, it may be helpful to focus on unique customer segments and enable customers to complete transactions quickly and easily through innovations such as touchscreens or intuitive interfaces.
