Apple has recently released iOS 17.4, bringing a host of updates and improvements to its popular Podcasts app. One of the most anticipated changes is the addition of auto-generated transcripts for supported podcasts, available in English, French, German, and Spanish languages. This exciting new feature will roll out in over 170 countries and regions, making it easier for listeners to follow along with their favorite shows.
Similar to the way lyrics work in Apple Music, users can now view a live text version of an episode and have the words highlighted as they listen. For added convenience, users can tap anywhere in the transcript to play the episode from that specific spot. All they have to do to access the transcript is click on the new “quote” icon at the bottom of the Now Playing screen. Additionally, for those who prefer to read the transcript without listening, they can simply hold down on the episode details page and select “View Transcript.”
One of the notable features of this new update is that a transcript will automatically be generated for every new episode published through Apple’s software. However, there may be a slight delay before the transcript appears, as it takes some time for the process to complete. Apple assures users that back catalog episodes will also receive transcripts over time.
Creators can take matters into their own hands by releasing their own transcripts through the Availability tab in Apple Podcasts Connect. It’s important to note, however, that the transcript must meet the company’s standards and not contain any spelling or punctuation errors.
Apple explains that episodes with simultaneous cross-talk or explicit content restrictions may limit the quality of the transcription or prevent it from being displayed altogether. Additionally, music lyrics will not be transcribed by the company.
While most of the changes in iOS 17.4 focus on EU developers, including a new fee structure and options for alternative app stores, there are some exciting updates for all users. The release also includes new frameworks and APIs for alternative browser engines and is expected to be available to the public in March.
Apple also recently made iOS 17.3 widely available, which includes the Stolen Device Protection feature and the ability to create collaborative playlists on Apple Music. As always, Apple continues to improve and innovate its products to provide the best user experience possible.
