The Rivian R2 has taken the electric vehicle market by storm, drawing in potential customers with its compact size and affordable price. In just 24 hours since its unveiling at an event in Laguna Beach, California, the R2 has received over 68,000 reservations, according to founder and CEO RJ Scaringe’s Friday post on Instagram.
The $100 deposit required for reservations is refundable and secures a spot for customers to purchase the R2, providing a glimpse into the demand for Rivian’s latest model.
In his post, Scaringe expressed his excitement for the strong resonance of the R2, as well as its counterparts, the R3 and R3x, within the community.
The R2 is a five-seat, all-electric midsize SUV with a range of over 300 miles and a starting price of $45,000. However, eager customers will have to wait a minimum of two years before getting behind the wheel of the R2, as Scaringe announced during the reveal event. The R2 will now be produced at Rivian’s factory in Normal, Illinois, which is a change from their initial plan to produce it at a $5 billion factory near Atlanta, Georgia. This change will save the company $2.25 billion and expedite the delivery process for customers.
Scaringe also announced during the reveal event that production of the R2 will begin in the first half of 2026.
Rivian also unveiled the R3 and R3x, all-electric hatchback vehicles with a sporty Honda e feel. The R3x will serve as the performance version, adding an extra level of excitement to their already highly-anticipated lineup.
