Voodoo, a French mobile apps and games publisher, has made a groundbreaking acquisition – BeReal. The sum of €500 million was exchanged, signaling a major move in the tech industry. As part of the acquisition, BeReal’s co-founder and CEO, Alexis Barreyat, will step down after a transition period. Taking his place as CEO of BeReal is Aymeric Roffé, the CEO of Wizz, one of Voodoo’s immensely popular social media apps.

Faced with the current global pandemic, BeReal has seen an impressive growth in its user base, surpassing 40 million active users. Despite this early success, the company has been struggling to maintain its momentum and expand its reach. With funding running low, BeReal had been on the lookout for a buyer.

“BeReal has shown exceptional user loyalty and remarkable growth, proving that people crave genuine connections with close friends and a platform to share unfiltered experiences,” said Alexandre Yazdi, Voodoo’s co-founder and CEO, in a press release.

“We are thrilled to unite our teams and harness Voodoo’s expertise and innovative technologies to elevate BeReal into the ultimate social network for authenticity.”

Yazdi took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm about the acquisition, announcing that “@BeReal_App is now part of @VoodooPlatform.” He highlighted BeReal as the most successful social app to launch in nearly a decade, praising their unique approach of sharing real and unedited content among true friends.

Voodoo plans to revitalize BeReal by introducing new features and refocusing on growth through both organic and paid marketing across key markets. Drawing from their extensive experience in developing and expanding mobile products such as Helix Jump, Mob Control, Block Jam 3D, and Wizz, Voodoo is eager to maximize BeReal’s potential.

In 2019, BeReal was founded with the mission to foster genuine connections amidst a sea of picture-perfect Instagram posts and Stories. On the app, users receive a daily push notification prompting them to post within a two-minute window, bypassing the pressure to perform and paving the way for authentic sharing.

Voodoo claims that BeReal is already a popular social network in three key markets: the United States, Japan, and France. In these countries, half of the users access the app at least six days a week, making it one of the most engaging platforms around.
