Roblox is bringing a new level of technology to its platform with the introduction of two innovative AI features, the company announced on Monday. These advancements, integrated into Roblox’s existing artificial intelligence, aim to streamline the process of creating avatars and 3D models for users.
The technologies were built on Roblox artificial intelligence, designed to help creators eliminate time-consuming avatar setup and texturing steps when building content on the Roblox platform.
The first of these features is called “Avatar Auto Setup” and greatly simplifies the process of avatar creation. By automatically converting a 3D body mesh into a live, animated avatar, creators can save valuable time and eliminate tedious setup steps. After selecting the feature, Roblox will run a series of tests on the asset, rigging, segmenting, and skinning the 3D model. The auto setup even maps the avatar’s body parts and facial features for clothing and facial animation, allowing the avatar to seamlessly interact with its surroundings.
According to Roblox, this new feature will drastically reduce the time it takes to complete a process that typically takes days, now completed in just a few minutes.
The second feature, known as “Texture Generator,” enables creators to easily adjust the appearance of 3D objects using simple text prompts. By mapping the object and adding a three-dimensional texture that aligns with the object’s geometry, this feature allows for quick prototyping and the creation of new and unique textures. For example, you can input a text prompt for a 3D wooden treasure chest, which will then generate a texture featuring sharp corners, wooden planks, and a lock. Or, by requesting a texture for a red weathered leather backpack, the feature will produce a fully 3D texture for the asset.
With Texture Generator, Roblox is enabling creators to do the same thing within 15 to 30 seconds, a process that would normally take hours or days for an artist to complete.
This feature also allows for the generation of multiple versions of an object in different colors or textures. For example, one model of a trophy can generate versions in gold, silver, and bronze.
Once a 3D object is generated, creators can choose to save and apply it. And if they are not satisfied with the result, they can simply try again and generate a new texture.
In a press release, Nick Tornow, Vice President of Creator Engineering at Roblox, stated, “Our new AI technologies help anyone from an indie developer to a professional game studio quickly create rich, compelling content on the Roblox platform – getting them from idea to shared reality, faster than ever.” This tool allows creators to focus on creative ideas rather than implementation, enhancing their experiences and ultimately growing their businesses.
Avatar Auto-Setup is currently available in alpha, while Texture Generator is available in a public beta and can be accessed through Roblox Studio.
