Linkedin Getty
LinkedIn quietly started to post information describing its new Premium Company Page six days ago. Pricing for premium company pages is not immediately disclosed, but it appears admins of pages that are eligible for it can see it. The Premium Company Page subscription in some ways will look very familiar, in that it taps into well-known LinkedIn mechanics. Testimonials, which LinkedIn has really promoted as a feature on profile pages for individuals, also get a push here: admins can display these prominently at the top of their premium pages. Last but not least, with LinkedIn big on verification lately, and here too a Page can get a golden badge with a premium subscription.

“Meta’s Repeat Outage: WhatsApp Experiences Major Service Interruption”

Facebook Glitch6
For the second time in just over a month, Meta’s apps including WhatsApp, and possibly Messenger and Instagram, are facing outages and intermittent issues. WhatsApp also confirmed the outage in an update to its X account. (In our own tests, Meta’s apps were loading and we could send messages via WhatsApp which indicates either the outages were not global in nature or they’ve already been fixed.) This is not the first time Meta’s apps have seen a sizable outage this year. At the time, Meta’s status page had signaled problems with products like Ads Manager as well.

Some of these features sound and work like rival browser Arc’s recent releases. But SigmaOS claims that its feature returns better-quality results, which is a hard metric to quantify. Going all out on AILast year, SigmaOS released some AI-powered features such as a contextual assistant called Airis, which can answer your questions about a web page or the broader web. For You will be Taken Over by TikTok: Ban Urged

Tiktok Us Flag
When some American users opened TikTok on Thursday morning, they were met with a full-screen message encouraging them to call Congress and say no to a TikTok ban. “Let Congress know what TikTok means to you and tell them to vote NO.”Below the message, users can click a red “call now” button. Last year, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testified before Congress for five hours, addressing lawmakers’ concerns about Chinese authorities accessing American data (TikTok, an American company, is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company). Chew has repeatedly stated that TikTok and ByteDance are not conduits for the Chinese government. The bill’s sponsors are urging TikTok to sever its ties with ByteDance to avoid this fate, or else it could lose its 170 million American users.

Apple has reversed its decision about blocking web apps, also known as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), on iPhones in the EU. Last month, Apple reduced the functionality of PWAs as mere website shortcuts with the release of the second beta of iOS 17.4, as security researcher Tommy Mysk and Open Web Advocacy had first pointed out. The company then updated its developer page saying that because of security risks like malicious web apps reading data from other web apps and accessing cameras, it decided to end support for home screen apps. Apple also said that PWAs had “very low user adoption” so there might not be a lot of impact on users. Separately, the Open Web Advocacy group published an open letter addressed to Tim Cook to lift the ban on web apps, which was signed by hundreds of organizations and individuals including Mastodon, internet advocate Cory Doctorowand Vercel CTO Malte Ubl.

“Clever, Yet Imperfect: The Latest AI-Enhanced ‘Pinch-to-Summarize’ Feature on Arc Browser”

Arc Search 1
The Browser company’s Arc, a browser focused on a less cluttered web experience, launched a new feature in its mobile app Arc Search that uses AI to summarize web pages. However, in our testing, the AI summaries themselves often miss the mark. Other users have also pointed out that the summary feature doesn’t work well with other languages. That said, there is also a problem with AI-powered summary features in other places as well. Additionally, Arc updated its “Browse for me” AI-powered search to make the pages generated as search results sharable.

Google Chrome is getting a new AI writing generator today. At its core, this Gemin-powered tool is essentially the existing “Help me write” feature from Gmail, but extended to the entire web and powered by one of Google’s latest Gemini AI models. To get started, head to the Chrome settings menu and look for the ‘Experimental AI’ page. From there, you can easily enable the new writing feature, as well as Google’s new automatic tab organizer (which I haven’t found particularly useful or smart so far) and the new Chrome theme manager). If you’re subscribed to Gemini Advanced, this new tool will not give you access to an enhanced writing model, a Google spokesperson told us.
