Tap into OpenAIs Foundry for Dedicated Compute Power to Run AI Models

OpenAI’s Foundry platform is designed for customers running larger workloads, and includes access to GPT-3.5, the latest machine learning model from OpenAI. With Foundry, customers can run models on dedicated capacity without having to rely on public servers. This gives customers more control over their data and allows them to amass larger datasets more quickly than would be possible through traditional means.

The Foundry inference platform provides full control over the configuration and performance profile of machine learning models, allowing users to infer at scale with minimal latency. This ability to quickly acquire accurate insights allows organizations tomake quick decisions and capitalize on trends in their data.

If Foundry launches as described, it will be a valuable tool for clients looking to directly activate large public compute resources in order to accelerate their machine learning efforts. OpenAI has long advocated for static allocations of compute capacity on public clouds due to the ease with which customers can monitor individual instances, and Foundry is likely to provide similar tools and enhancements. In order to ensure that tenants have the necessary resources to fully utilize their services, the Foundry is also introducing a new pricing scheme which encourages everyone to act as part of a larger collaborative network. For every two rental computing units used, one additional rental unit is provided at no additional cost. This means that customers can effectively double their investment without increasing their overall expense

There are a few factors that restrict the use of GPT-3.5 for large-scale simulation purposes. Firstly, it is significantly more expensive than its competitors, with running a lightweight version costing $78,000 for a three-month commitment or $264,000 over a one-year commitment. Secondly, instances will not be dirt cheap; running a lightweight version on Nvidia’s DGX Station costs $149,000 per unit. These prices will likely remain prohibitively high for many organizations looking to conduct large-scale simulations using GPT-3.5 in the near future.

Many text-generating models commonly used in natural language processing require a certain amount of context, or information about the surrounding sentence, in order to generate additional text. A new model, GPT-3.5, listed in the instance pricing chart with a 4k max context window suggests that it is likely the long-awaited GPT-4 — or perhaps even a stepping stone toward it.
