Humane shook the tech world today with the announcement of its debut product, the one and only, Ai Pin. After years of development, the Bay Area-based hardware startup, founded in 2017 by ex-Apple employees Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, is finally ready to unveil its highly-anticipated innovation. With a whopping $230 million in funding and a laser focus on creating cutting-edge AI devices, Humane is setting the stage for a game-changing product launch.
“We believe in harnessing the power and popularity of generative AI platforms, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, to create devices that will revolutionize the way we interact with technology,” shared Bongiorno and Chaudhri in an exclusive interview with TechCrunch.
The Ai Pin is just the beginning. Humane has big plans for a whole line of devices that utilize the latest in artificial intelligence technology. By utilizing a variety of LLM-based systems, the company is confident it has chosen the best platform for each individual job, ensuring top-notch performance and user experience.
TechCrunch got the inside scoop on Humane’s journey and future plans from its visionary co-founders. But they didn’t stop there. They also had the opportunity to test out the Ai Pin first-hand. While the device is still considered a first-generation product, with some minor hiccups in reliability and functionality, the team’s attention to detail reveals their expert Apple heritage.
Priced at $699, Humane envisions the Ai Pin as a trailblazer in freeing technology from the limitations of its predecessors. The device is voice-activated and always connected, encouraging users to take a break from their phone screens every once in a while.
In a recent discussion, Bongiorno shared a pivotal moment that inspired the creation of the pin. “We were at a dinner, and there was a family sitting next to us. The parents and kids were all on their phones the entire time. It sparked a conversation about the incredible tool we built, but also the potential negative effects,” she explained.
“We want to offer an alternative. A device that can enhance your life without consuming all your time and attention,” added Chaudhri.
The Ai Pin is just the beginning of what is sure to be a series of innovative products that will ride the wave of generative AI. Back in January, Rabbit made waves at CES with its R1 handheld. And in February, Brain.AI made a splash with its novel operating system powered by generative AI. It’s clear that this field has endless potential, especially in light of the struggles faced by traditional smartphone sales.
For $699, customers will receive an Ai Pin, an extra battery, and an AI charging case. Different color options are available starting at $799, and a range of accessories can be purchased for $29 to $49. Customers can also opt for the subscription service, which will cost $24. As a goodwill gesture, Humane is offering three months free with the purchase of an almighty Ai Pin.
